What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Check the junkyards. shouldn't be so scary used.
Some rope, a gasket, some goop & 3 bits of glass.
Junkyard might even give you trade in value on your solid pane.

 

It's totally the two doors catch each other up top - forces you to open front door wide to get back door open & you need room to step around it all. PIA in tight spaces, then do the dance again to close it all up. If the top gasket attached to the truck instead of the door.
But size wise the truck is awesome (with bed extender on occasion).

 

I’ve got a brand new one from my buddy at the glass shop. 250 bucks. Sliding rear window. Quality looks good. They’re simple enough
To replace if I ever decide to go power



In other news my rear harness came in. So when the beds off illl be replacing it so I can have the 7 pin working

 

For those that have installed a backup camera, or a screen with that capability,
What/where do I tie the reverse signal input into?

 

Reverse light.

 

See that's what I was thinking, but that a long way to run a wire from the dash. If the signal wire came off the camera like I expected it to, that's exactly how i'd prefer to wire it.

So i called Crutchfield and I can tap into the reverse wire on a harness behind the driver kick pannel. It will either be green w/ red stripe or red w/ black stripe.

 

I see it listed as red/black, drive kick panel, gray 8 pin plug, pin 2.

You get that bypass?

 

You could just wire t to the reverse wire that lights up the dash. Should be pretty close to the radio

 

Are you talking about the bulb that lights up inside the gauge cluster? I think that would be a huge pain compared to simply going to the kick panel. Plus it could be extremely low current. I doubt the reverse input needs much current but I would still recommend the kick.

Definitely try to keep it inside the cab if possible. You risk corrosion by going anywhere outside. Yes, I know there are ways to prevent it but when I did mine I went to the kick and was done in half the time it took me to type this.

 

You looking for reverse power for the camera or for the head unit?

For the camera it's pretty easy to tap the trailer wiring harness. For the head unit I have no idea since the screen I have gets the signal from the camera to activate.

 

Most all cameras that I have done only have two wires, power and ground, and an RCA output that plugs into the head unit. The head unit typically has a wire that needs reverse input signal to tell the head unit to switch sources to view the camera.

I would always wire the camera power to the radio accessory circuit and use the vehicle reverse wire for the head unit input.

This way the camera is always on anytime that the headunit is on and you can always view the camera by selecting the source if need be. Some cameras had a super slow startup time as well. So powering them off of the reverse light would have an annoying delay before the camera turned on.

This method will draw the current from the vehicle accessory wire, which should be rated at 10A and can handle the draw. It also only uses the reverse circuit for a trigger which puts very little additional load on this circuit that Toyota probably didnt design for additional load.

 

My recollection is that there is a connector you can tie into behind the radio. I found a youtube video of a guy with a Sequoia that found it. I don't have the link handy.

For the head unit. I bought a pioneer camera for my pioneer screen thinking it would be plug n play. I'm not thrilled with it so far. I got waaaay too many wires I gotta fit into the dash now. It would've been so much easier to tap into the reverse.light for signal and the head unit itself for power

Meh, trust me, you could fit a small cow (or a really large cat) back there. I have everything that you do plus two small amps, and they all tuck away nicely if you keep the wiring organized.

Try doing this on any kind of VW product and you'll be super grateful for the real estate these trucks have.

Does anyone think it's worth it to try and sell my factory front skid plate? I can't seem to find the part for sale online to know what it would cost new. Is it worth $75-50? It's in good shape overall.

 

That ignition illumination looks great! I'll have to try that.

 

I use my feet to lift the tires back up. If the truck is low enough to the ground it makes it much easier. I don't like hugging tires and wheels to lift them.

 

The signal wire should run in the look
Near the radio. T-tap should make it work. But there are other options

All clear now.
She needs a bath bad. Too many bugs and dust on my commute lol

 

Starting early, I removed the rear drums and using a 1/2" drill with wire wheel and some WD40 rust remover cleaned up the rust, washed with Brakleen and dried them. I then washed them with Adams Heavy Duty All Purpose Cleaner and degreaser, rinsed and dried again. Hit them with three coats of primer, three of blue base, and three clear coats. Between coats, I sprayed the brake parts with a heavy stream of Brakleen and cleaning up the brake dust. Mounted the wheels with my shovel technique and retired, pooped. Got this project done just in time as the weather is moving quickly into fall with much cooler temps and rain beginning tonight.

The blue paint adds a very subtle bit of blue color to the truck and its solid grayish color - not garish or overdone in my opinion. Kind of goes with my blue interior lighting, though when the lighting shows best - at night - the blue of the calipers and drums is hard to see as other than dark.



Can't wait until spring when the sun will shine once again and I get to see them in strong sunlight.
