I searched for this topic first but did not get any hits. I notice that on many 2nd Gen pics the shifter is on the floor vs. the steering column.

I have a 2013 Tundra w/Off Road package with the shifter on the steering column. Does anyone know what determined where the shifter was placed?

This is my first truck so not well versed in these details. Thanks to all.

On the 3rd Gen it's called the premium package. Gives you console shifter and power driver seat. Not sure if 2nd Gen is the same story, but seems likely.

The column shifter came in trucks with the front bench seat. The console shifter is in all trucks with front bucket seats.

    Edit: edited for correct information.

The SR trim level had bench seats and the column shifter. The SR5 trim level did as well, unless the SR5 upgrade package was added (this brought the console shifter, bucket seats, 38 gal. tank, etc). Limited, platinum/1794 and pro had console shifter only.

I wanted buckets & console at first, but I am glad I got the split bench & column shifter.

Sorry - forgot to check back on this thread. Rex Kramer's pic is right on. The only plus I can find is the fold down seat between driver/passenger seats where the floor shifter/console would be. Makes it difficult to mount a phone around the shifter for sure.

Sorry to resurrect, just trying to keep things organized and use the search occasionally....

Any long term advantages or disadvantages either way?

Rex, why are you glad you went with the column?

    I'm looking at a 2007 SR5 with column shift

I think both have their advantages and disadvantages. For me, I like having the following options with the bench seat/column shifter:

    - Ability to have a sixth passenger for a quick in city trip if needed.
    - Ability to fold the area up or down for more in-cabin storage space.
    - The center console, on the other side of the seat that I use 80 percent of the time, is actually a really well thought out center console with several storage compartments with spaces for everything from pens, tissues and anything else you need to store. Easy to rest your arm on it as well.
    - A lot of people don’t realize this option also includes an awesome hidden storage bin in the underside of the middle bench seat. Pop the seat and take a look. It’s pretty cool.
    - Many companies make cell phone holders that fit fine with the column option. They even call it the column shifter second generation option.

Pros and cons for both. Love these Tundras. Hope this helps with your decision. Can't go wrong on these trucks with whatever you choose.

Mine is a regular cab, and that 3rd seat may come in handy some day.

But after almost 3 1/2 years of ownership, I am thinking about removing the center jump seat altogether... I keep the seat back up 24/7 and never use any of the storage, even that huge storage box under the seat. It's dead weight and waster space to me right now.

Column shifters are as American as baseball and lever action rifles.

Putting a console shifter in a pickup is sacriledge. :amen:

the preference is 100% subjective. no one can tell you which you should have/buy. what do you need more? a center seat, or a ton of storage and places to set things while driving? i think the biggest argument for the shifter location is how much you use the s-mode shifting. if you are just backing down the gears when you go down a hill while towing, then the column is fine. if you actively use s mode a lot, then the floor shifter is a must.

i just went from the jump seat to the center console, but kept the column shifter. mostly because im not about to go through the effort to swap out the steering column, but also cause i like the shifter as an armrest to fidget with my phone when i want to mess with google maps.

im desperate to find an insert to put into the oem shifter location though. the space under there without the shifter guts is cavernous. i have a bunch of grocerry bags stuffed in there, as well as some rags and a rain jacket. i just want to figure out how to make a removable tray so i can stop worrying about dropping stuff down in there. the only way i can think of doing it is a 3d printer... which i dont have.

poking the hornets nest for sure. my father(in his mid 60s) was furious that he couldnt get a manual f250 for towing a few years back. "i refuse to believe that it will be easier to tow with an automatic"... "no one wants to shift gears anymore"... "i want to decide which gear its going to downshift to going up a hill, and which gear to ride when decending!"

that lasted less than 2 weeks into owing it. only cause it took 13 days before he needed to tow something. lol.

:boink:I've been heard to quote "Automatics are for girls" THAT really riles up the Land Cruiser crowd!

But in todays world, especially Tundra's have such an amazing auto trans and they are better for sure than in past.

Nah, I prefer a pickup to have a stick, but mass produced automatic transmissions were developed in the US. :boink: It's synonymous with amercan vehicles like the V8 engine is.

I guess that means I have to settle for a column shifter lol.

I'm one of those "odd balls" who use S Mode 100% of the time, so the floor shifter works well for me.

My column shifter is in S Mode 100% of the time, it's very easy to toggle up & down through the gears as needed with the column shifter.

I’ll have to try that. I don’t think I’ve ever selected that. I do prefer the column shift, just keeps the cabin area more user friendly. I had a ‘93 SR5 mini truck and it’s column shift was very unfriendly, poor leverage design.

the other reason id prefer a console shifter is the shifting gates... when im stuck in snow and i need to rock it back and forth, its easier to whack it from D to R with the console. the column you have to make sure you hit the right spot, which is certainly do-able, but with my truck being a 2nd car, and not what i daily drive, i occasionally miss the mark and end up in N which is a surprise when i floor it.

but ill admit, its still sort of a personal preference.

I wasn't aware of that. My Brother has a 07 but he doesn't "partake" with S mode. My mechanic tells me I'll get 100,000 miles from my stock brakes on my 2010. Just another benefit from choosing which gears to use for speed, load and road conditions!

There are times I get in my 2014 floor shifter and reach for the old column shifter..

Having driven manual cars most of my life, I just strongly prefer the ergonomics and looks of the console shifter, as well as the bucket seats and permanent armrest.
I know it is weird, but when looking for the truck, console shifter was pretty much a must-have for me.

I would have preferred a bench seat and column shifter in my DC. The console/shifter is a huge waste of space and an obstacle. It makes it impossible to reach over to the passenger floor from the driver's seat.

Has anyone swapped from console to column? This interests me VERY much. The aesthetic bothers me, almost as much as the how quickly the console shift area gets dirty. I plan on appointing my interior with some American hardwood (species TBD) and could easily fab a matching blank or useable filler.
