Wife took her 2008 4Runner in to have it inspected at a local Auto-Lab service facility. Service tech did a complimentary inspection, said everything checked out but said PS fluid needed to be flushed. Said Toyotas are known to have power steering failures if you don't flush the fluid . Really? Still looked pretty clean to me. Anyone on here ever flush your PS fluid?

Flushed it when I bought it. Per my Schaeffer rep’s recommendation I went with a hydraulic oil instead of trans fluid. Much more consistent viscosity and stable at low and high temp. Gets thinner in the low winter temps and thicker in the hot temps. I just used the method of sucking all the old from the tank, filling it up, driving to work and back, rinse and repeat till the color changed to the new fluid, about 2 quarts. Stupid easy

Also I don’t know exactly what weight it was of fluid. I just told him my truck calls for trans fluid and he said “use this instead, run the same thing in my truck that called for trans fluid and it’s better in winter” filled up 2 quart bottles for me and off I went

Change mine every 5-6 years. On cars I've kept forever that interval has allowed me to keep the same rack, pump, and hoses.

Dirty fluid gets abrasive but 2 years IMHO is overkill. It's cheap though... So who cares. Use a turkey baster and pull and replace from the reservoir about 5 times driving between each change.

Its becoming a lost art/requirement as the majority are electric now.

After reading this I just suck some fluid out with my mitey vac thing and added dexron atf to it. I will do this several times then it should be good. Did the same to my wife’s Subaru and it was filthy.

I use a turkey baster and just suck out the reservoir at every oil change. I replaced with royal purple PS fluid.

I purchased a battery acid sucker outer thingy at O'Reilly and used that to remove as much fluid as I could and replaced with Lucas Power Steering fluid. Gonna do that a few more times but it seems to not make noise anymore. That's a good thing.
