I did look into it like you suggested. As Jason said, CYA claus for sure. Kinda funny they recommended the screwdriver method like yours due to the spring rates on these style of COs.

I talked with King and Filty Motorsports.

This is the email I recieved from Ben....

    Hi Chris,

    I’m happy to help.

While the King instructions do suggest removing the coilovers from the vehicle to adjust preload, it can be done on the vehicle with some creativity.

The adjustment pin that King sends with the shocks is junk. I recommend taking it with you to Home Depot and picking up a set of screwdrivers that have the same size shaft (0.32" or smaller) and then cutting them down to make two that have ¾” of shaft exposed and two that have 3” or more shaft exposed (see attached). This way you will have different sizes and the ability to use two at the same time. Also, the reservoir hose fitting are AN/JIC fitting that, if you crack them loose just a bit, you can rotate the reservoir hose out of the way to get access to the coil nut without losing oil (losing a bit of oil though is not a problem). You will have to go bit-by-bit but you can make adjustments this way without removing them from the vehicle. Just make sure that the vehicle is lifted and supported by the frame and give the threads on the coilover a good soaking with WD-40.

As for preload calculations, almost all IFS applications are just under a 2:1 ratio so ¼” of preload will add just under ½” of height at the tire.

    Hope that helps!

So procedurally you are correct Dave. Removing the CO is the correct way to adjust preload. They both did not mention a spring compressor though, but would make adjusting a lot easier on a 600-700 lb spring. I’m only compressing 125/175 rear and 150/200 on the front. So considerably a lot less. I can pretty much set preload on my rear by hand. Lol.

Good discussion. I learned some stuff.

When I first tried to adjust the collar and preload on my King's they were a PITA and yes the truck was jacked up on jack stands with full droop wheels off the ground. I did even tried to rent spring compressor tools, but none of the spring compressor would not even fit between the coils. I did find one spring compressor to fit between the coil, but the clearance was so tight that if I even tried to preload I'm already scratching my head on how would I even take the spring compressor out.

I went to King down the street right from my work place a couple of days later and picked up 2 of those T-handled pick tool from them. What I found out what was easy (not sure if it worked for anyone else) was having the UCA separated from the spindle, using both collar pick tools, and they ended up spinning easily and freely (of course the threads and coilover was clean and drenched with WD40 a few hours before). Only reason why I had the UCA separated was because I was installing my Total Chaos at that time as well. There was more promising space to adjust the collar without the UCA in the way and it also free'd up a bit more compression being held up with the spindle and UCA.

Super busy day at work yesterday so didnt have time to work on the truck. Called Elka yesterday all I can say is a top notch company they told me exactly what to do. It does involve taking the shocks of and a special compression machine. They said if any damage to the threads has happened they will send a new shock no questions asked!!! I was more then impressed, they had me talk to the engineer over the truck department. He said they would make sure I was more than happy with the Elka system. Great group of ppl in Canada to talk to and deal with. I’ll hopefully have time to work on it Saturday and keep you guys posted .

Got my coilovers finally done work has been busy.... Elka was great sent emails called back checked on me. rushed me the spacers for the top of the spring just a metal washer that sets on the top of the spring, had to remove the entire spring from the shock. When I removed the spring the split collar was digging into the springi believe the metal spacers would have helped. Patrick with Elka said they are gonna install the washers on the ones they ship now. I appreciate all the help from the forum, lots of great guys with a ton of mechanical experience. And I would not hesitate to buy anything from Elka great ppl and a quality product!! They could have easily told me to get bent but did just the opposite.

Hi Patrick. I just finished installing a set of your 2-3 inch coilovers. They are the most recent version with 700 pound springs. I need to lower the overall passenger side by 1/2 of an inch. Any idea how far I need to turn the ring to achieve that? Thanks!

Markman, sorry to jump on your thread. I just need a little help

Hello TruckyTruck! The thread pitch on our shocks is equivalent to 1.5mm by turn. The Tundra has a motion ratio around 1.9 to 2.0 so to achieve the desired 1/2" (12.7m) you would need approximately 8.5 turns.

I really respect Elka for this answer. Most shock companies just reply with a “every truck is different” answer

Ha, and I'm about as different as they come.

That's perfect and exactly what I needed to know. Thank you!

If I have 1 inch of threads showing right now and reduce the preload by 8.5 turns, will I still have a decent ride?

Or would it be better to reduce by 4.25 turns on the passenger and increase preload on the driver's side by 4.25 turns?

    Sorry, I'm a novice.

If you are trying to get rid of the infamous Toyota lean, I would recommend to increase preload only on the driver side. That’s what most of our customers do. Still, you could also reduce on the passenger side of halfway on each side. It depends what you are expecting in terms of ground clearance and lift vs. Ride quality for daily driving.

Okay, thank you! I appreciate your response and all the help. I'm going to put about 500 miles on it before I make any adjustments since it's only a half inch off. And if it hasn't leveled out, I'll go from there. Thanks again!

Hi Patrick, would you mind coming over to your vendor thread and verifying the last few posts? A gentleman there may have found an error in the math. I believe he may be right unless I'm missing something. I just want to make sure before I go to work on adjustments. Thanks you!

Indeed, the gentlemen was right and my math was wrong since we are talking about lift at the wheel. Answer should have been 4.25 turns more preload on the driver side. Thanks !
