Looking at getting my first DA and cant decide between the GG6, PC or the Torq. I have some small scratches and light swirling that I want to attempt to remedy. Would the basic pads be orange, white, black? I would also get the Lake Country 5" backing plate. Will be my first DA and attempt at DA polishing, so beginner setup. Also, what polishes and glazes would be best? I think I saw @Pudge mention Megs 205? I have Megs 03 for a finishing glaze, just need a light abrasive polish, dont think I need a heavy cutting polish or pad?

    Thanks!

For the DA, skip the Torq, and go with the Griots or Porter Cable. I have both the Torq and Griots, and the Griots is a much better machine. I haven’t tried a PC, but see t recommended by people I trust.

Orange, white, and black pads will handle pretty much anything you want to do. As for polishes, there’s a lot of good options. You generally can’t go wrong with Meguair’s stuff. Carpro makes great products, and I’ve read good things about the Griots line as well.

No sweat. I still have a lot more of learning to do about the subject, so don’t take anything I say as a definitive answer.

Look at @Jimes results at post #522 here. He did some beautiful work, and lists some of his processes in the thread. https://www.tundras.com/threads/show-off-that-reflection.44820/page-18#post-1368179

He uses a Rupes machine, which is pretty high end, but his actual products he used shouldn’t break the bank.

Definitely go with the griots or PC. The PC will be a bit cheaper and do the job just fine, the GG6 is just a little better as far as power from what I read.

Get lake country hdo pads, yellow and black should do most jobs. Be sure to get enough of them. You'll want more than you think. At least 3 each.
I also like microfiber pads, either buff and shine uro fiber or megs cutting discs.

You can get a lot of work done with megs 205, you can get a decent amount of cut if needed. The ket to get extra cut with 205 is saturating the pad, but we can get to that later. One downside to the 205 is the dusting. Something like carpro essence is low dusting but also expensive and the 205 you can get a little more versatile with.

Also don't count griots polishes out, especially if you can get a package deal with the GG6, they make some great polishing and finishing "creams".

Autogeek is running a sale on DA’s, pads, and polishes right now, looks like for the next four hours.

    Not bad for this kit.

I bought the nano ibird kit for $554.63 Rupes LHR75E kit for $440 Rupes LHR12E kit for $359.99 so $1354.62 plus tax for the machines then spent like $600 for all kinds of pads and polishes, waxes, sealant, bead maker and micro fibers. When I looked at a reputable shop to fully detail and paint correct the Wife’s IS350 it would have cost about 2500-3000 which I thought was crazy cause I would rather put up the initial investment to get great tools and do it myself and let it pay for itself. Plus I’m a tool whore so that didn’t help. I use Rupes keramilk polish for the swirls and scratches and Rupes diamond ultra polish for the finishing touches then use jetseal for the sealant. If I have time after the 12 hours of cure time I do a coat or two of bead maker then I’m done. Good luck with the detailing. It’s hard work but very rewarding when you’re done.

Would you recommend the combo you liked or this one for someone looking to getting started with a DA. I typically clay bar and hand wax my truck, but have been looking into getting a DA. The Griot's, Porter, and even the Harbor Freight one have been on my short list.

I’d say the one I recommended, since it comes with a 5” backing plat and pads. They are easier to work with.
The second one comes with CCS pads. Those are what I’ve been using, but from what I’ve been reading the flat ones are preferable. I actually just ordered some flat and hdo pads to start using.

I bought my first and only DA a few years ago. I went with a Porter Cable 7424XP in a complete kit from Chemical Guys. It came with the velcro backing plate, the pads you should need, pad cleaner, some microfiber cloths, and pad lube.

Chemical guys usually has a good sale around black Friday if you aren't in a hurry.

The first time I ever used a DA was on my black truck with YouTube and the internet to teach me. I was nervous taking the truck out of the garage but it came out great.

I have been using Meg's Ultimate Compound, Polish, and Wax, but want to try some other products to compare.

I use Chemical Guys on YouTube for lessons on how to use it. The whole sharpie lines on the backing plate has really helped me knowing what's going with the polisher around curves, etc.

I'm can't compare it to any other DA polishers, but I don't have any complaints with the PC for a newbie.

I use CG's pad chart and flow chart for reference.

    Good luck!

Just to add some confusion...in another thread, I mentioned that Griots has now come out with a new DA, the G9. Slightly more powerful than the GG6 and a slightly larger throw (9mm) for the same price point, with some very nice ergonomical features. Very high end for an entry level machine

Another vote here for the Griots polishers.
Been using the Boss G21 with the Boss pads for a few years now and the the system works fantastic. The Boss liquids works really well too, long working times and minimal to no dust.
The new G9 looks great and will likely pick one up by the end of the year.

Are they phasing out the GG6? If so, I wonder if they’ll drop the price on it.

GG6 is not even on their website anymore...this unit will be replacing it. I'll be getting their 3 inch backing plate and converting the GG6...and getting one of these...love the design and innovations in a 150.00 polisher

Do it. The upgraded ergonomics alone are worth it.
Not to mention the fact that you can completely disconnect the power cable from the machine and upgrade it to a longer one, if needed, without having to open the machine or cutting and splicing.

@NewImprovedRon your polisher is out of date. You’re gonna need to upgrade.

Anyone on here have experience with the Griots 5" Lithium Ion random orbital? Looks a little pricey but seems pretty light & capable.

If you can get away with using the corded version, do it. One of the main disadvantages I see with the cordless option is the working time per charge and also the torque reduction compared to the corded counter part.

If you're planning to use it once or twice a year there's nothing wrong with Harbor Freights DA polisher. Its not pro grade but its a great garage tool. I've had mine for years. I use chemical guys pads, cutting compound and polish along with Mcgregor's clay with Griot's detailer. keeps this old Sequoia tuned up pretty well.

Go figure I finally bite the bullet on a GG6 about a month ago and if I had waited I could have gotten the upgraded version for about the same price. I'm sure for the amount I use it I'll be happy with the 6 for a long time

I probably won't use mine again til fall unless I can get a paid job. Steve talked some sense into me, so I won't be polishing the tundra again til next year.
