5.29 gears with 35s?

Anyone on here who regeared to 5.29 running 35’s? Trying to decide between that and 4.88. Looking for real world experience. Thanks

I think I’ve read all those threads, but didn’t seem to actually see anyone who had 5.29s on 35s. I’m getting my gears from Keith at dirtydeeds and he has been very helpful, and he recommended the 5.29s but my local install shops think I should do 4.88.

 

I followed what Keith said and went with 5.29s and had 35s with the intention of going 37s. It drove really nice. Barely touch the gas and it went up highway 1 without struggling at all. I’m weighed down with camping gear(steel bed rack and roof top tent) and skids. After I went to 37s it still felt like it was effortless climbing up highway 1. Not as jumpy, but I also have a pedal commander and DAP tune. The Pedal commander I used to leave on sport (+3) on 35s and stock gears. Now I leave it on city(+2) and still feels way stronger on the 35s. I left it on the same setting for the 37s, but also added the hypertech speedo calibrator which fixed the speedo, can’t really tell if it did anything else. Now I’m having a blast figuring out where I’m rubbing with 37s weekly. But I would say you would be happy with the 5.29s. Keith is not wrong.

 

Year/ make /model/ engine/transmission?
All of those will factor into gear ratio choice.

 

depends if you drive on the highway a lot. On my 06 I have the 5spd trans and if I'm cruising at 70mph my rpms are at 2500 before it was around 2000. I'm running 4.88 gears. low end torque is good. I figured if I've went 5.29 my rpms will be closer to 3k. Also if your planning to go up in tire size in the future or are adding more weight to the truck like sliders, bumpers etc

You don’t want to regear twice! I think gear choice depends on where you live too. If I lived in a rural flat area i might be fine with 4.88

Mountains and hills would lend me to 5.29 easily

 

Our trucks don’t mind slightly Steele gears. As a matter of fact they prefer it.

Slightly steeper gears are seen by the ecu as ‘less load’ and in return to less load the ecu adds a little more timkng and pulls a little more fuel. Both things are not only better for mpg, but also power!!

The extra rpm is offset by all of the above. On top of shifting back n forth less. Holding gears better. Etc.

Regearing is something I haven’t really looked into much. Sorry if this has already been mentioned somewhere but what is a general idea for the cost of regearing? Thanks!

Whats your rpm at 70mph.

 

Thats seems about right its like 2063rpms for 35 with 5.29. For 32" tires with 4.88 gears its like 2081 rpms whats your mpg

 

I actually just did my 2019 1794 4x4 with 5.29s With 35s and 20s. Totally Bad Ass! We took it up to the Mountains of NC and 3,000 ft up and it ate those steep mountains up like nobody's business. By the time I got back to Florida I bought another 2017 TSS 4x4 and just slapped 5.29s , 35s , 20s and an Auburn Pro LSD locker in it as well. I'm breaking it all in this week. BEST DECISION EVER!!!!!!! I AM LIVING PROOF. BUY THEM. You want Nitro 5.29s and Nitro Install kits. Slap in the Auburn Pro while you're at it lol you wont regret it. This all came straight from @dirtydeeds Mouth what to buy. Buy I did! Keep me posted!

CaptainJohnnySR5 - what kind of lift do have?

 

I'm running 305/55/20s, 33.5 inch tires, with 5.29 gears, Auburn LSD, and a TRD supercharger. Keith set up the install of the gears and LSD. I've got 400-500 miles on the install. If I floor it, it's instantly at redline.

What's interesting is that my speedo is almost correct, only off by 1 mph at 60 mph.

X2 that truck must be crazy off the line and my Speedo is about 3mph off from factory i have 32" tires too.

 

Well that depends on what Tundra you're asking about. I have a ready Lift 4" on the White 1794 4x4 with Everything TRD under it. If you go 6" you can't do TRD. That is with 35s with 20x9s +18. Yes it rubs but I did a front panel trimming, removed mud flaps to stop 90% rub and going to do the cab chop because it rubs off pavement in hard turns.
I did the Ready Lift 4" on my Blue 17 TSS 4x4 and the Ass Kicker was I went with Billstein 5100 B8s . The back went beautifully and the front whooped my ass due to YOU CANNOT USE THE 5100S ON 3RD CLIP SETTING AND THE STRUT SPACER AT THE SAME TIME! YEP NEVER GOT THAT MEMO! 12HRS OF TOTAL HELL AND CONFUSION. I finally removed the spacer after multiple teardowns and try agains and the whole front went back together like butter. 35s ,20x9s +18 and same deal. Lesson learned. My 12 SR5 2WD has RC 4" and I did all TRD underneath it as well with 33s 18s +18and no trimming just removed the flaps.

Prior to gears, I was getting a solid 11 mpg in mixed city and highway driving with plenty of stop and go. Now I'm getting 10 mpg. Granted, I've been doing some scientific acceleration tests (seat of the pants) and listening to my newly installed BA 10 inch exhaust, so that probably has an effect on mileage.

It's fast for a full size truck for sure. I've got a Bullydog GT waiting to be installed to squeeze out some more power, but I'm not sure how much better it will be than the TRD tune.

I've been thinking about changing up my wheel/tire setup. I'm running 20" Method NVs and 305/55/20 KO2s. The Methods are 40 lbs and the KO2s are 60 lbs, so it really impacts acceleration off the line. Factory Platinum wheels and tires are about 80 lbs combined. I previously ran Terra Grappler G2 XLs in the same size, 305/55/20, and those were only 50 lbs. The truck definitely felt more lively with those tires, especially off the line. The KO2s are a better tire and handle better though, so the added weight was a trade off.

I'm thinking of going with some SCS 18s (everyone please sign up for these: https://www.tundras.com/threads/scs-f5-18x9.47977/) at 27 lbs and 295/70/18s (33.9 inch tires) in a light weight Terra Grappler G2 (50 lbs). I'll be saving 20+ lbs over my current setup. I bet that'll make as much of a difference in acceleration as the gears.

33” tires go 4.88
34+ go 5.29

We charge $1200. But $1500 isn’t outta line either. It’s a lot of work.

I talked with Keith tonite and his knowledge is astounding!
I wanted a BD tuner when I called.... that's no longer the case after a quick 45 minute talk with Keith.... He talked me right outta giving him $400
Larger, heavier tires than stock REQUIRE correct gears first.
These are not his words exactly... this is just my interpretation of how to do a performance upgrade in a "somewhat" correct order. INTERPRETATION IS THE KEY WORD HERE FOLKS. I am no professional, just an enthusiast.
I will put 5.29 gears in my beast, if and only if the 2021 4th gen Tundra disappoints.
And dammit all, I hope it does cuz I love this truck!
