Had a genius idea, but my hole saw was slightly off and I have some weird bubble in my paint now . Mounted it in the front valence!

Looks like a decent camera but the field of view is 145 degrees. Mine "seems" wider but I would have to look up the specs

    Hey @TundraTex

I wonder if you can help me diagnose a problem. My camera broke down a few days ago. I got a new Nakita camera to replace it, but the connectors were different, so I had to rewire everything again through the firewall to the FRAC harness. Last night I did all the wiring and tested the camera. It worked fine. I unplugged the camera and isolated everything nicely (I will need to figure out a bracket to mount the new camera permanently on my TRD Pro grille, and I will do this over the weekend). Unfortunately, this morning I found that the reverse camera isn’t working at all (neither with the switch or the reverse gear). The VIM seems to be working fine though. The only explanation I can think of is that I unplugged and removed the front camera when I finished. Could having ‘empty’ connectors on the grille prevent the FRAC harness from working at all? I am puzzled with this because I did test everything when I finished wiring last night.

    Thanks in advance!

What do you mean by this? What empty connectors on the grill?

After I finished wiring I unplugged the camera and put it away. I didn't have time to install it permanently bc I need to come up with some sort of bracket for my grille. I couldn't think that unplugging the front camera could disable the whole harness, but itsi a possibility.

Is there any way you could simply plug in the front camera and see if that solves your problem?

That will be the first thing I try when I get home tonight. I hope that solves it, but even if that is the case, I wanted to get the opinion of TundraTex and others who are savvy on electrical stuff. It isn't intuitive at all that unplugging the front camera could completely disable the harness and the back up camara

When selecting the rear camera, do you get a black screen or does the screen just stay on the page it was already on?

The VIM function is totally separate from the camera function and unplugging the front camera should have no effect on the rear camera. If the front camera is unplugged and you select the front camera switch position, you should get a black screen. This is because the video mode is selected but there is no camera video present. That would be normal operation. The rear camera should not be affected. If no black screen occurs in the front and no rear camera video appears at all, then there is some other issue. You can also check the FRAC Harness fuse just to make sure it didn't get blown.

I would also disconnect and reconnect the 24-pin and 28-pin connectors just to make sure everything is securely connected. Let me know how things worked when you plugged the front cam in again.

So last night finally I had time to look into this. The 'mystery' is solved. Once all the wiring is in place, somehow unplugging the front camera disables the FRAC harness (the reverse camera stops working either through the switch or the putting the reverse gear). When I plugged back in the camera the whole system worked like a charm. I know it was a silly problem, but this outcome isn't intuitive at all to me. One caveat is that I am using an S-Tech switch system; maybe that has some effect. Also, the camera I am using is the Nakita 720p.

This could be handy for all those who need to adapt a camera to a 2019 Pro grille (with TSS). This time around I wanted to mount the camera as high as possible to somehow protect it from the elements and get the best vision range: I saw how front cameras in the Jeep Gladiator and the 2020 Tacoma come from the factory, so I tried to replicate that set-up. I bought a bar and an angle bracket at Home and used the 2 factory horn bolts to attach this mount (I shaped the bar and cut it accordingly). Using these 2 bolts, the mount turns out to be exactly at the right height to get the camera right above and center the TOYOTA emblem. Granted, this is a project that is a little bit involved, but the final look is very clean and I think it’s the best location for a Pro grille.

Is there such thing as a camera switch that is labeled front/rear camera and is lit?

Have a photo of the view on the screen? I'm still SO close to doing this, but I just don't know what camera to get, seems like quality is hit or miss on them.

I'm glad you resolved the problem. I'm not very familiar with the S-Tech switch panel or how it is it wired. I'll have to research this mystery a bit more, because the FRAC circuit by design will work without a front camera. Thanks for the update.

In one picture you can see a sample of my view sitting behind the wheel. The other picture is what the camera allows me to see: it's a good 10 feet that previously were hiding. My truck is lifted about 3" from stock.

    Hey @TundraTex :hattip:

    1. I've looked through most of this thread and I'm sure this question has been asked. Does my rear camera still come on, without switching any buttons, when I put my truck in reverse?
    2. I just need to order through your website-correct?

    Thanks,
    Tom :pccoffee:

    1. Yes, when you put your truck in Reverse, the backup camera comes on. And If you have the front camera On and put your truck in reverse, it will bypass the front camera and display the backup camera on the screen.
    2. Yes through his site or PM @TundraTex directly.

    Hello Tom,

Great questions. I can confirm @Makoy339 is 100% correct with with his answers. Gotta love the FRAC support from all the FRAC folks out there!

I designed the FRAC Harness to maintain OEM functionality. So the reverse camera will always come up when you shift into reverse - just like OEM - even if you happen to have the front camera selected at the time.

Use a 20mm Hole saw or progressive drill bit for the main hole. Then you need to do a little trimming of the exrtra plastic on the back side. It is a little tricky because the switch blank is only about 24 mm. So you have to be pretty centered up.
