Stick with stock or TRD?

I was really surprised the TRD didn't have some sort of X or H pipe in it.

 

I am going to go against what others are saying here. If you are sensitive to noise, don't get the TRD exhaust. It sounds great at idle and great under medum to hard throttle. The problem is that if you do any amount of freeway driving it has a drone around 1300-1900 RPM, this is where the tundra drives/shifts from 55-70 and you get an annoying (to me resonance) its enough that you can actually feel it through your feet on the floorboard. I have added crazy amounts of sound deadening to the doors and back of cab, and I still hear it.

Keith sells resonators that you can add to a TRD exhaust system that will help. You do have to cut holes in your TRD tailpipes to mount them. I was going to go that route to try and reduce the drone. Then keith had his sale and I decided to go with his TRD replacement system, 24x5 mild with integral resonators so I would have a "clean" install. The TRD replacement with integral resonators reduced the drone by around 50% but it is still there and noticeable. I am actually considering adding his resonators to the tailpipes (don't ask how deep I would be into an exhaust system at that point) to kill the last bit of resonance or just remove the TRD replacement and go back to stock.

I used to read all these posts before I got the TRD exhaust about it being awesome and "quiet" and was surprised when I got it. It isn't going to wake up your neighbors, so it is quiet in that sense, but it is noticeable on the highway, and really annoying to get a resonance every time you load up going up a hill or give it a little more gas to speed up while locked up in 6th gear.

 

Funny you mentioned that, DD went on to mention a Y or H pipe and everyone ran with it for awhile. I probably should look at his website and see what performance oriented systems he has and make a hard comparison to TRD. I like a nice exhaust as much as the next guy, but I'd need to be reassured it's purpose over aesthetics and sound. I think the days of bolt on performance are gone, short of a SC. I'm also done with drone. Too many hot rods and engine swaps in the 70s. My last hearing test was comical. Just my. 02

 

I am not quoting dyno’s Here or giving true specs, just my personal opinion with my personal experience with my truck and exhaust coupled with my CAI which he said he said he also had one.

 

I wasn't holding to anything, it's tough to guage what works and how well it works when combined with other performance equipment. Not to hijack, but I wonder how well the TRD/CAI Interacts with the exhaust.. Hmmm

 

True dual systems work best with long tube headers.

 

For those on the fence, try searching local dealerships to see if you can find a used Tundra for sale with the TRD exhaust and go for a test drive. I say used, because the exhaust does mellow out with some miles vs brand new.

 

Yes, this is exactly what I am afraid of. I don't mind increased rumble at idle, nor do I mind lots of sound at medium to hard throttle, but the drone sound at cruise would kill this for me.

This is good to hear. So the dirty deeds 24x5 is quieter than the TRD mufflers it sounds like.

 

Difficult but possible. Before I purchased the Tundra I have now which came with TRD exhaust new, I drove a used one the dealership had with 30,000 miles. I was surprised how much smoother and quieter it was compared to new. I took a chance and after 6,000 miles I can say mine has gotten better with mileage.

stock dude! Most power, quiet, functional. Toyota's imho are best when true to the sound that comes from the factory. I think DD is good, but that resonator that goes perpendicular is not for everyone.

The TRD exhaust is just straight up annoying on the highway, and the low end power loss is noticeable.

 

I agree, but if I could boost factory power with an aftermarket cat-back without altering the factory sound - I probably would.

By the way, to my ears - listening to Stevie Nicks sing is a lot like hearing the dreaded drone most aftermarket systems produce.

 

True Dat! TRD Exhaust in conjunction with the TRD CAI or with the AFE CAI? And possibly differences?

 

Well.... only one way to rectify this find someone that has a nicely broken in TRD exhaust and ride with them and that will give you your answer. I am in Central California your welcome to ride in mine anytime.

Yeah I agree after having stock exhaust for years and then recently upgrading to TRD dual. Listening to music not quite as enjoyable when you have to crank it up over the exhaust on the freeway.

On the upside, pedestrians and cars should be able to hear me coming in a parking lot so safety factor a bit better

 

Yes sir. Working on 13 years in Santa Maria will be my first and last. Anytime, I would dig it to met up and talk the business.

 

I tried to be the responsible adult and at first just did a muffler swap with a large Magnaflow muffler (5 x 11 x 24 I think). To my surprise, the drone was beyond horrible. Within a week I got the TRD system and had it installed. No regrets.

 

If you live in the snow belt, I would recommend against the TRD. Its made out of some cheap 409 stainless steel that rusts like mad. I would recommend going with Borla if you want something built out of better material. I am pretty disappointed with the amount of corrosion on my TRD exhaust.
