Stainless Steel Braided Brake Lines

I made the switch to stainless steel braided brake lines years ago on my 2001 Tundra and used Russell's stainless steel braided lines then. Now I'm thinking of switching out the brake lines on my 2017 Tundra Platinum with some stainless steel braided lines, but I don't know if I should go with lines sold by StopTech or Goodridge? Price is close -- $145 for the StopTech lines vs. $175 for the Goodridge lines. Both packages come with all 6 lines needed. The StopTech lines look like they have a plastic or rubber component on the end and I'm worried about durability. Does anyone have experience with either of these brands on a 3rd gen Tundra?

They are all stainless. Its just a rubber sleeve over the fitting. I have stop tech on my other two cars. No problems with it.

 

I've been thinking about getting some too. Was also wondering about peoples input. My old Lexus SC has Goodridge lines on Supra TT brakes. I liked them a lot.

 

Yea, I currently have that brake setup on my SC. Stoptech lines on that and my ISF. Good products.

 

Sdhq sells them as well. I installed them on my 2015. Pretty easy. So now you have 3 choices.

The SDHQ set only comes with 4 lines? I thought our Tundras needed 2 for the front and 4 for the rear...

 

Nope. Just 4 total. 2 in front and 2 in rear. It has metal lines then the soft lines that you will replace and back to metal in the rear.

That interesting. I haven’t had the rear wheel off in a log time. Didn’t realize that the rear rubber lines were there. I assumed they would be right by caliper similar to the front

 

Is there a brake performance difference by switching to these?

 

My 2015 CM has 6 lines, 2 front, 4 rear. I used the Goodridge brand.

 

My 08 also. I orded custom lines but I cant remember the mfgr right now...out of cali. They has color options and length options.

 

Yeah, 6 total lines was what I was thinking as well. Most kits I see have all 6 lines.

does the Crown kit have 6 hoses? It doesn't specify

 

The Crown kit description says "Four (4) hose kit includes fronts and rears."

 

I got 6. Each caliper. And 2 @ the rear end.

 

Do they bleed like old brakes or do you have to use the ABS pump like a new Tacoma? Ive had some sitting on my work bench a while.

 

I have a vacuum bleeder that I used. I did not need to cycle the abs.

 

I have a vacuum bleeder as well. I just was stumped on the tacoma for a bit until I found a obscure thread about it because I had one of the first 2016 and was one of the first to heavily modify it Around here.

 

For those of you that installed stainless lines, how much of an improvement (if any) did you notice in pedal feel? Any firmer with the stainless lines?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from those that change all 6 lines.

 

Not much. I had hoped with the new ss lines and some fancy Bosch fluid, that braking would improve but then again my truck is pretty heavy. New pads would probably the best bang for the buck. Although it was nice to replace my old, corroded lines.

 

for sure. it reduces brake fade when you’re out on the track.

 

I installed the 6 line StopTech kit and the improvement is marginal, but noticeable -- at least to me. I had Russell stainless steel lines on on my '01 Tundra so I knew what to expect. If you are looking for radical change, this isn't it.

 

This is what I expected to hear. I went through a ton of brake upgrades on my track car to get the feel right, so I figured the improvement from just lines would be marginal. I think the Tundra brakes are overboosted and that's why the pedal is soft. Unfortunately there is no easy to way to fix that, which is sucks since the stock 4 piston calipers are pretty decent. I'm going to hold off on lines until I need new pads and then do it all at once.

 

I don’t have a lift on my truck …01 tundra what brake lines would be best for me my old ones are very bad and someone welded them together I guess to stop a leak before I had it …. Smh tundra abuse lol
