Nice job. I thought about doing that and also looked into purchasing a set of boxes that install the same way (saw them online and they were super expensive), but I like and use the flat carpet floor under the seat (when the seat is folded up) and do not want to give it up. Plus, you don't gain that much storage with these boxes for the trouble. If I were going to do it, I would prefer to use a thinner material to build the boxes (like the metal pan the other poster used or a top grade 1/4 baltic birch plywood) and I prefer to have lids on the boxes that are flush with the floor and maybe even carpeted with the same carpet as the floor, with maybe a small finger hole to open the lid with hinges. Of course, this design would hold even less (a lot less) and would require a lot of work, and thus it is probably not worth it. I also worry it would hurt the resell of the truck (that is always a big concern). After thinking about it for a while, I bought a camper shell and called it a day.

Decided to make one without cutting carpet its not real deep but it holds a few items one mite need. Used scrape wood and small nail gun.

I’ve been looking at these as well, they make on that fits around the factory sub woofer.

 

This is inspiring but I’ve got one question... if I’m building boxes from scratch, why not build them longer under the seat???? How far under the seat can you go? Is there something that would stop you from going 4-6 more inches towards the back?

 

You can go further back, but the floor starts to slope up, so you would not have the same depth all the way through.
I would suggest cutting the 'standard' size out of the foam and then gradually cut back an inch or so at a time until you get to a point where you see that it would not be worth it anymore.

The way I built mine on top of the carpet, there is not much room in the back maybe 2 or 3 inches. When you close the seat it will hit if taller.

 

not sure if this helps but I purposely used cheap plastic bins. I then used a heat gun to help them “mold” /fit to the ridges in the floor seen in the 1st pic. I could of gone with bigger bins but this fits my needs.

Something else to note - according to the ESP site, there is a wiring harness under the middle section on 2020 and 2021 that have the smart key. Even so, I'm thinking of doing this one. I've got a woodshop and plenty of 1/2" baltic birch.

Seems to me that someone handy with a welder could box in those seat mounts to create a frame and open up a large area for storage. Maybe even fab a riser to increase the height under that rear seat?

I sketched a doodle on that pic above, but can't figure out how to attach a file...

 

The ESP single-piece box does just that (replaces the seat mount frames) - that's part of why it is so much more expensive than the other metal version or the plastic version. I've seen (but can't remember the brand) another version that did that AND raised the seat a little too.

Your work is really cool. I have wanted to ask a question about these under-seat storage solutions and since you did this, perhaps you are a good guy to ask. Is there any reason your storage openings do not extend further back under the rear seats? Even the ESP’s and Tuffy’s do not attempt to make use of the space further back under those seats. I wondered if there was some obstruction that limited how far back you could open up for storage boxes? Did you happen to find any such limitation? Love what you did! Just wondering if the storage spaces could be bigger. Thanks for showing what you did.

 

The floor starts to slope up further back. Just a gentle slope so you could use it, but it will not have a flat floor all the way back. Passenger side also has the jack there.

 

Anyone try something like this with a DC? If not, I suppose I could be the guinea pig...

 

Dang I forgot all about this thread. Great ideas here! I’ll add mine to the list. It has a little less storage because of the lids, but I needed them. Added a Toyota Trucks emblem and wired in lights to the dome light. Color matched mine with Raptor liner. Pic in black with lights is before lids and liner.
