I don't think it will vary much, if you look at the size trailers everyone's been posting the small trailers are netting the same mpg as the bigger ones. I think the main issue is the aero of the camper and that's what determines the mpg.

 

Update....borrowed a 4500 lbs travel trailer. 30ft with bunkhouse. Gas mileage was 9.2 mpg, so about 1mpg better than the last one we used, which was about 7000 lbs. MPG's weren't a huge difference, but it sure was a bunch smoother!

 

I got 14mpg when towing our camper but it was only a 15ft Aliner pop up A frame weighing about 1900 lbs. Didn’t even feel like anything was back there.

 

That's a super light 30'er. My 24' is 5.5k. Just towed about 5-6 hours to Indiana, close to Illinois and got 7.7ish (used refuel to check dash calculations and came out within 2 tenths). Wind was brutal. Glad it was a smooth tow for ya!

 

they at least get to use that non-road use, pink-dyed diesel that’s waaay cheaper than normal diesel. Fire departments up there in noco use it too. Gotta ease the pain of the job

 

I towed 5000 lb bay boat 300 miles of mostly IH with Tacoma and got 9 with regular and almost 10 with 93. I get the same with Tundra. I have not tried premium because I never get the tank low enough.

 

About 8-9 here towing a 25ft weighing in around 5k.

Where I live we have farmers all around us. Not uncommon to see the tractor itself pulled up next to the off road tank. Also not uncommon to see it showing 200 gallons was just filled out of it either.

 

Not to mention the ticket if highway patrol decides to dip your tank!

Agreed. I have only known one guy that was tested. It was by Idaho State Patrol after the trooper noticed a slip tank in the bed of the truck. That being said I did know a few farmer's kids in high school that got away with running it exclusively for years... I am with you. Not worth the risk.

 

The MPGs and tank issues seem to be a real issue for the tundra. I didn’t even look at domestic half tons as I’m very Japanese car loyal. What are the domestic trucks getting while towing similar loads. Stopping every 150miles is a pain in the rear enough to think about a different truck

 

If you get the 38 gallon tank you'll be better off. If you're towing frequently (6000lbs+ more than once a month?) A diesel domestic would likely be the better option.

 

I have a 2015 so the 38 wasn’t an option and putting one in isn’t cheap. It’s also not even 38 usable just like the crappy 26 isn’t 26 usable.

What kind of mpgs are the domestic gas trucks getting when towing and what size tanks. This gas tank and mpg issue makes the tundra good for nothing more than looking good as a grocery getter which is my primary use but even around town you’re at the gas station every few days, geez

Weighs around 3100 loaded up with gear. I'm getting around 10.5 to 12 just cruising at 60-65. Up and down the MT Mountains is what kills me, I'm usually down to about 50ish mph I don't ever push it to hard if I don't have to. Last year bringing home mine and my Buddies elk added another 700-900ish lbs and that made a difference. Dropped down to 7.5 to 9 with a good head win .

My dad always says his 1974 chevy One ton crew cab 454 got 8mpg “empty, towing, tailwind, headwind”. Didnt matter.

So we should look at it as we get are getting extra mpg when not towing

 

With my Aliner Classic with dormers, dry at 2000 lbs, I get 14.5 to 15.5 on pavement with a few cities slowing tings down. Driving on gravel roads, 4 wheel drive doing max of 20 mph, I get about 9-10 mpg.

I average some were around 8.3. My trailer is only 17 foot at 3200 dry weight. And fully load with gear and water around 4100 I'm guessing. I have a Coachman Viking with bunks in back.

 

Just went on a 5,000 plus mile trip towing our 29 ft. Jayco. We averaged 8.98 mpg (calculated on Fuelly app). MPG varied from as low as 6.6 to as high as 11.5, traveling at 65 mph.

 

Yeah I started looking at diesels this week. I think I'm a year out from an upgrade to an HD. I cant do the 8mpg engine screaming up hill much longer.
