New Tires/Wheels - 285/70R18

OK, so I thought I'd post a few pics for someone wanting to use my setup as a point of reference, I couldn't really find anyone who had done this. I think I accomplished the look I was after:

• Bilstein 5100's upfront on mid setting (I do have the removed tires/wheels weighing down the bed a little, but there is generally a slight rake still on this setting)
• Nitto Exo Grappler Tires - Size 285/70R18 (one of the few tires made in this size, the only AT (or hybrid as they call it) that I could find)
• Vision Fury Wheels - 18" diameter, 8.5" width with +25mm offset
• TRD Pro front grille and color match front bumper end caps
• Plasti-dip blacked out rear bumper end caps (hopefully color match one of these days)
• Front window tint

I did have to remove the small mud flap thing that attaches to the front bumper and I had to do some very minor trimming of the larger mud flap that attaches to the rear of the front wheel well, but it's still on and functioning. No trimming to the skid plate or anything else. Just a few miles on the tires, I can't really review, but there was less road noise than I expected. I didn't go above 55 mph however.

Looks great! Keep us updated on those tires as you put more miles on em. That size looks perfect with a level truck. Def considering those once my Coopers wear down. Wondering if theyd fit without rubbing on stock rims. Are they wider than 295/70/18s?

 

After I get some more miles on the tires I'll let you know how they ride. Initial impression is that I really like them, both in appearance and ride. They might rub the skid plate on a stock rim, at least my 275/70R18 size tires on my stock wheels did. Would have been a whole lot less to just trim the skid plate however.

 

I was just looking at the exo grappler last night. Looks like a good tire and good for snow, which is really important where I live. 285/70/18 does look perfect! I've got 2.5" in the front and 1.5" in the back with stock trd wheels from a 15. The trd wheels that came with my truck are crappy looking. I don't want to change wheels again and 295 is too wide for the 8" wheels and offset. Was planning on going with the 275/70/18. But they are only an inch taller. 285/65 are about the same height as stock. How tall are the 285/70/18?

 

I'm interested as well. I had Nitto Crossteks, for my Tacoma and they were perfect. The largest size they make in Crosstek though is stock Tundra tire size.

How do you compare these to the OEM AT2? Did the tire shop buy back your OEM tires as well as your upgraded 275/70/18?

 

I found the answer to my question, the 285/70/18's are 33.98x11.5. I think that would fit with my 2.5 inch lift and look perfect! I'm going to have to call around for pricing.

 

Yup that size is perfect. Slightly skinnier and shorter than a 295 so should still be able to run em on stock wheels with level. Too bad I only have 10k on these Coopers....

 

I know, right! The general grabber at's that were on my truck when I bought it still have half the tread on them still. Hard to convince the wife that they suck. All she sees is the tread.

 

Yeah, that seems right. You'll probably still have to remove/trim the mud flaps. I think that's about as big as you could go without having to do much. That number seems right, and they seem to fill out the wheel well a lot on my truck, so I think their specs are right on. I'll let you know what I think about the tires, but with 50 miles on them thus far I really like them.

 

Thanks. They ride louder than the AT2, but I like the ride a lot more. I sold both the OEM set and the upgraded set through Craigslist. Drives my wife crazy.....

 

I was told these are really good in the snow, but have yet to test. I can let you know, but that was important for me as well living in Idaho and using this as our ski/play rig. Looks like my mpg's are going to take a hit though......

 

What if I add a couple of couchbuilder shims. I'm going to get one to get rid of the drivers side lean. I could put two on the drivers side and one on the passenger side. But then I'd probably need ucas.hmm

 

Or just the one and trim if I have to.

 

Yep, I think I'm sold on the exos. Got a zero interest for a year deal from discover to keep the wife happy. Now I just need to find the best deal and decide if I should go for the 285s or play it safe and get the 275s. Would be cheaper and less of an impact on mpg. But the 285s look so good.

Yeah - 275 is playing it safe and will help mpg, but I really like the look of the 285's. For reference, I paid $265/tire at Discount Tire here in ID.

 

$265 isn't too bad, I've going to shop discount, bigO, firestone. Tire buyer wants $273. Not sure about taxes with them, they ship from in state.

Yeah, Discount was more than TireBuyer, but matched their price. I would have paid taxes with them too, they have a warehouse locally. I also got a rebate of like $50 or something like that, if it arrives.

@harrisdoggy your truck looks great! Would you mind showing a pic of the minor trimming you did on the rear mud flap (behind the front wheel)? Thanks!

 

@757TUNDRA - I've attached a few pics: 2 of the mud flap that sits at the back of the front fender (which was trimmed) and 1 of the removed little mud flap at the front of the front fender. I might have a little rubbing while in reverse and while turning fairly sharp, I gotta figure that out.

 

Hey josh, I know you just got the fancy new shoes. But how does your truck driver now, are the exos pretty smooth, not to stiff and harsh? How's the noise?

 

Damn those things look good on your truck! That bronze paint is badass to. I'm ready to pull the trigger on them, just got to get the best price. Gonna work on that tomorrow. The guy I talked to discount today thought the 285's will fit with the stock wheels without trimming. Maybe the skidplate? What about the back of the tire and frame clearance? You think I might get rubbinng there with stockers?

 

Hey Joe - I am not very much of a truck/car guy, and I have also never seen a bad movie and my favorite meal was the last one I just ate, so I am not too good at being critical. I will say these tires ride pretty darn good. They are a little noisier than stock, but don't seem that much noisier than a beefy A/T tire. I am really happy with them thus far. The Tundra itself doesn't seem to ride as nice as my '15 Ford did, so the louder/stiffer tire might be as noticeable to me since the truck itself seems to ride rougher/louder than other trucks. Anywho, I like the look and wouldn't shy from the tire because of the ride/noise. I did take them on the freeway at 70 mph this morning and it was definitely louder than stock, but not terrible. If I commuted a lot I make think otherwise, but this seems to be a good tire for my needs.

 

Hey Joe - I think the only issue you would have with stock is the skid plate. My 275/70R18 tires hit the skid plate on stock wheels. Otherwise I would give it a shot.

 

Did you notice how close the 275 were to the frame at the back? Can't trim anything there. Skidplate trimming isn't a problem.
