I saw this thread before I bought my Tundra in Feb. 2018. So far my Tundra has been great. At 10K miles, my engine has no sign of a leak.... Yet.

After reading all the woes the F150s on the Ford forum were having, I decided to go with a Tundra. My old 99 F150 was running good, but it was costing me $$ with replacing the AC, leaky windshield, etc. I did not want to get stranded in the mountains here. There are areas of no cell coverage and tow trucks are not available in remote sites.

Fortunately, a seeping or leaking cam tower shouldn't leave your Tundra stranded if that ever happens.

    I used this info to purchase a 2016 Tundra SR5 4WD.
The dealer repaired both sides as part of the deal. Mine has 79k on the clock. Their price would have been $3200.
I inspected three used Tundras and two had the cam tower leak. This is a very helpful forum.

Mine was there on the passenger side.
It can occur on either. Have them do both sides. They use a black sealant rather than gray.
    Hold them accountable!

So I got about 800mi on my 19' Tundra with the 5.7. I'm trying to keep up with this thread, but what should I be looking for to see if I have the problem?

I looked in the wheel well from the front of the tire looking back into the engine bay, block. You'll see that woven mesh, think it's some heat shield. Should be the seam on the block right above that location.

Shouldn't it really be a gasket and not just a sealant?

Thanks I just went out for a quick peek and looks good so far from what I can see. Don't see any sealant squeezed out either like in the pic on the petition. Does this affect the Flex Fuel version of this engine as well?

I've looked several times since I've had the truck, picked it up Labor day, 2018. Never saw a sign of it till this evening. Just rolled 19k on it. Can't answer about the Flex, don't think so but I'm sure someone will correct me.

Watch the rounded area of the cover towards the fire wall. Look just above the front tires and shine a good light all along the sealant line. It is not difficult to see.

All versions can leak. Especially if your sealant is gray.

Did a search on the leak. Found this forum. Signed up, add me to the list. 2013 Tundra Crew TSS, just over 76K miles. Had oil changed 3 weeks ago at dealership. Few days later, oil spots in the garage floor - nothing major. Took it back in following weekend. Advised it was dip stick o-ring. $150 later (was not happy, save for another thread) was also advised of the “minor-not to worry” cam leak. Service manager said if it gets worse, gonna be pricey. Could run up to $8K because they have to pull the engine or lift the cab off to repair. Talked to the technician, he said not to worry and if he does it, doesn’t have to pull the engine. Not sure what to do other than try not to worry about it.

For me... I would never let any shop touch my 5.7 for some of the pictures shown on this thread. The repair is very invasive and opens opportunities for other leaks and unrelated problems. Unless it is truly a fire risk, I'd keep an eye on it and just clean it periodically if not threatening.

After reading 13 pages on this topic, I do not see one 2019 with this issue. Odd thing is there are several 2018s that had a leak very early in life.

Calling all 2019 owners, does anyone have a cam tower leak to report?

Yeah I get you, but some of us just don't want to tolerate leaking oil from a brand new truck. Unfortunately my 2018 did develop another issue as a result of the repair and the dealer ended up buying it back. It's just very frustrating and embarrassing that a company like Toyota hasn't resolved this issue after 12 years.

I hear you and I understand as a 2018 owner as well and will do the same if it ever becomes a potential liability issue or I see/smell it progressing.

I know the guy who fixed mine, he’s a competent tech. It’s not that big of a deal. 23k miles later and no leaks and no issues related to the repair.

My dealer needed a week to make the repair. I did not pester them and I hope it gives a good result. I do realise it is very involved, that is why it was billed at $3200. This was covered on my behalf.

Hi Everyone, well it happened to me. I just checked and I have oil leakage on the passenger side. I have a 2013 Crewmax with 56k. Not sure what to do next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have the grey gasket seal.

Go to the dealer—they/Toyota may be able to help you out since you're probably not too far out of your powertrain warranty and are still under 60k miles. Sorry and good luck!

BTW guys please sign the petition for a Toyota recall. If you have a Tundra its not if but when you will have an oil leak. Pissed as hell.
