What's in your rear end?

Well I was thinking about selectable lockers until I found out about the lsd
I don’t go off road much just wanted the extra insurance when I do. I do tow often tho and it’s my daily driver... from Luis to Luis what’s you opinion

 

In that case an LSD would be a good choice. You have 4wd anyway right?

Hey fellas. I need to replace my 2000 1st gen non-LSD rear axle. There is an 2004 axle available to me with a locking diff. Can I just swap them out? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

 

Not necessarily. Run my VIN and it's silent on the limited slip. But, limited slip is an inherent part of the SR5 package, at least for 2003. The truck most certainly does have it; I know them well, it's there. But the VIN check does not list it.

 

I thought we already determined this isn't the case. I don't think SR5 package means you automatically get the LSD. Other members with the SR5 package have already commented in this thread saying they don't have the LSD.Are you thinking of the TRD package maybe?

 

Here's an 03 brochure, look at page 3, the V-8, regular cab, SR5 4x4. That's what I have. It has that limited slip. The on-line VIN check doesn't list it for my truck, but it has it.

No, it was an option, not standard on the SR5.

I think you are mis-reading the brochure....it says it was an option for V-8, regular cab 4x4s, not standard...essentially it's saying if you buy an SR5, then you can get the limited-slip differential as an option, it doesn't mean it's standard equipment.



Page 2 shows the standard features for your truck and there is no mention of a limited-slip differential...

Re-reading that a few more times, I think you're right.

 

I painted over my LSD sticker on the rear diff back in 2003.

 

When my rear needed rebuild I wanted to send it to him. Back then he seemed to be on a temporary retirement.

 

He did my LandCruiser last before his retirement. He first declined but was already working on a LandCruiser set up so agreed to do mine. Not one problem with the install

 

Have you compared VINs on your panels and the main one to make sure they match?

Ok so I've got an 06 Limited with LSD on the VIN spec and the sticker on the pumpkin.

Trouble is, this thing spins wheels like nobodies business! Just today I stuck the right side into a snow bank (left side on dry pavement) and almost couldn't get out because that right rear wheel was spinning while the left side was being lazy.

Do the factory LSDs wear out? Can they be rebuilt on the truck?

 

Yes, they can wear out, but that doesn't mean your's is. The situation you described sounds typical for a mechanical LSD...it's not a locker. There was too much discrepancy in the traction between the two wheels for the LSD to be effective in your situation.

 

What are the symptoms of a worn LSD? What goes bad?

 

Excessive slip in scenarios where it shouldn't...like straight ahead in the wet, or on turns in the dry....what is the history of your rear diff. oil? Did you change it? Did you put in the friction modifier?

 

My diff was checked out by a pretty decent shop when I acquire the vehicle a few years back, and I'm not sure if they felt the need to change the dif oil or not.

 

I checked the brochure and I guess the TRD Sport included a LSD in 2003, but the Off road didn't, interesting. Not a lot of TRD sport 1 gens that I have seen though , I'm all alone.

I’ve got a 2004 Access Cab. My spec sheet reads ‘LD 3.909mm Limited Slip Differential’. Is that the mechanical version of LSD that‘s mentioned in this thread? I live in the Pacific Northwest and it hasn’t proved useful. Rear end breaks loose on wet roads on a regular basis. I have a Leer 122 canopy on back, which I would think would add enough weight to help.

 

Yes, that's the mechanical LSD. It won't stop it from breaking loose completely...but it's better than nothing if it's still working...how many miles do you have?

Have you changed the rear end fluid recently? If not give that a try and be sure to use the right kind with a friction modifier. I've been using Lucas fluid, no modifier needed and it works well.

The LSD has its limits. You can still break loose but if it is functioning properly it's nowhere near as bad as an open diff in the rain. Tires play a big role too.

 

Differential service was performed at a dealership at 120k, so I would hope they used the appropriate fluid. I guess you never know unless you do it yourself. Unfortunately, I don’t have a great place for working on it myself right now. I’m running Cooper AT3’s in load range E (had a Fourwheelcamper on it for a couple of years), but they’re ready to be replaced. Moving back to load range C, so hopefully new tread and more pliable tires will help.

Hellwig 7700 Rear Sway Bar helps keep the other rear tire planted in turns as an added bonus. I’ve experienced the inside tire not planting in wet slow turns prior to the sway bar.

The above advice is good on the Lucas for LS oil. Helps to have the right oil. Hard to know if a shop goon just threw in the Regular.

On mine at higher speeds on acceleration in curves on wet roads the inside wheel will break loose slightly and then the LSD kicks in which to me feels like a controlled drift into a safe back on track turn line.

 

I used Amsoil sever gear oil which supposedly has the modifiers in there, but I still threw a bottle of the friction modifier they sell in as well. After your done, your also supposed to drive in a figure 8 6.79 times, to work the new fluid/modifier into the clutch packs.
