GoPro video of a weird noise

Wow that sounds just like it! I might have to run out on my lunch break to try this.

 

As a secondary confirmation, (or not) aim your GoPro at each bushing point and drive your vehicle to see if the sound matches visual movement.

I went out for grins and checked my shackles per the vid. They are solid. My noise is the lack of washers/silencers on the springs.

 

Sounds like it could be the carrier bearing starting to go out. Maybe it’s got just enough play to wiggle when you coast. Maybe point the camera at the carrier bearing and see if the sound is consistent with its movement. The sound in the video I posted sounds like what I’m hearing in your video to a less severe degree. But then again you did say your mechanic checked the driveshaft so I could be wrong.

 

My old Titan would creak from the leaf springs having bad bushing isolators between the leafs. It just took some grease on them every once in a while.

 

The whole driveshaft has been checked and it has been greased. I don’t think that’s the issue. It really seems more like metal rubbing than a rotational noise.

 

That’s what PHM seems to be suffering from as well. How do you grease those? Just some grease between the springs wherever you can squeeze it in?

 

Yeah basically I would just get some grease in better the springs where the rubber isolators were supposed to be. By hand or with a brush, and I just used wheel bearing grease. Seemed to work well unless I spent a lot of time on the dirt roads and then it would get noisy faster.

 

Have you actually looked at the leaf springs them self. I have a 2016 platinum Tundra that just had both replaced because they were separating and I had the same noise

 

I guess I have nothing to compare them to. They look good to me, I don’t see any cracks, but... not 100% sure. I’ll have some help this weekend - they’ll bounce on the bumper and I’ll spend time under trying to locate the sound.

 

Nothing to lose, I have my grease gun, I can just squirt some grease and see what happens.

 

Mine looked fine as well.

 

If I can pinpoint the noise, I’ll pay for the new leaf springs and install a pair. I just need to verify what’s making the noise first.

 

Is the tailgate rattling?

I doubt grease would help. If the leaf springs rivet is worn or separating, shackle bushing or shock bushing is worn or loose then you have a gap which causes the rattle. My front end would creak sometimes and for that problem grease is all it takes.

 

I tried removing the tailgate to eliminate this and it still made the noise.

 

I’ll replace them if they are bad, as long as I can identify where the damn noise is coming from.

 

Grease is cheap. It sounded crazy when I had my Titan but for 2 years it kept that thing quiet. Never know, you might get lucky.

I had my dad swing left and right on the bumper but couldn’t pinpoint the noise. It didn’t seem to be the coming from the leaf spring bushings. It seems it’s somewhere further up. Might be the bed mounts, but I can’t tell. It’s still driving me insane.

 

Doesn't your truck have a topper on it? I mentiomed before that my truck is making similar noises as yours. When my dad was in my truck he seemed to think it might be the topper making noises.

 

On my 04' I went two months looking for a rattle/knocking when I turned left or hit speed bumps. I eventually tracked it down to a rock (from a gravel load) was wedged between my bed and the cab, about two feet below the rear window. It would bind when the cab and bed had pressure applied under bumps or turning. It is frustrating though!

 

Did this ever get solved?

 

It stopped making noises. No clue how or why. Maybe I had a rock too, maybe it was the topper, maybe it whatever it was settled and stop bumping. No clue, but I am glad it is not there.
