Got a call from Toyota and they are looking at the rust on my (03) frame and 18 other trucks in the area (Illinois). When I posted pics of my broken strut (a few weeks ago) everyone seemed to comment on how much rust I had. Toyota may replace the frame but do they offer a buy out. Love the truck and would like to keep it. What is the process? Thanks

I've never heard of a buy out. If they replace your frame that's probably the best possible outcome. Your truck will be down for a few(maybe several) weeks and they will give you a loner car.

@lsaami how long was your truck in the shop for a new frame? Seemed like it was over a month.

Would be kind of cool to get a new frame after all those years.

I thought they ended the frame swap thing already.

00-03 had an actual recall for for frame rust on the rear crossmember. 00-08 were covered under a service campaign that ends 12 years from vehicle in service date.

Just back from Toyota. They are going to recoat the frame which was done a few years ago. Apparently no holes and they have a newer and better super duper coating. Have monstrous new loaner that is awesome, feels like I'm driving a house. I still love my 03. Though it is compelling to think about.

It's your truck but I wouldn't let them do that. Once they coat the frame they are essentially free from any future responsibility. It's cased closed in their book. Another member yesterday just reported that Toyota sprayed his frame in 2012 and his frame just broke in half. Now Toyota is telling him they won't do anything for it. I only saw one picture of your truck but it looked bad. You can't just cover up rust like that and hope it goes away. It will get worse.

Below is the link where the other member describes what happened.

What is the difference between a recall and a service campaign?

Not sure what other options I have....a new frame would be great but not sure if I can go in and demand one....I imagine its Toyotas call, the frame was already once coated, I believe in 2015. I'd be happy to get another 5-6 years out of it.

Recall is good forever (until repairs are completed) basically while the service campaign has a limited lifespan. The work done between the two was basically the same, with the exception of the 00-03 trucks getting a new rear crossmember if it failed and a frame coating.

It was more like 4 months. Because these trucks are so old and so few of them are getting frames replaced, they’re make to order, so it takes a LONG time.

My buddies Crew Cab rear seats area is like a football field back there. He’s a little guy. The truck compensates.

I'm 6ft'ish and the rear seat area is football'ish behind me to. I'm pretty thin so the truck compensated.
I prefer the driving character of 05-06
