Check out my post over on Tacoma World when i had my Tacoma I found a red camper shell and painted it. Turned out pretty good.
    I used Tan Plasti dip.

Do you still have it? I wonder how well plastidip has help up. The only issue is I'd like to match the color - I got the shell for free so if I spend $400 to color match it, it won't be crazy expensive.

No I sold the truck to get my Tundra. 200K HARD supercharged miles on it. it was time for it to go.
I do have Black Plasti dip on my Mirrors and it still looks good after a year.

I went the Plasti dip route because I did want to pay someone to paint the shell, and I like to do everything myself.

If I could get OEM toyota color plastidip for $45, I might consider doing it!

Old paint will be hard to match.
    I'd paint it black.

Try this site for a very good color match. I ordered 1D6 custom color for my side doink. It turned out pretty well. Looks good from most angles. Certain angles you can tell its ‘blended/feathered’.

Order your color match along with a can of clear coat. Both are lacquer finish. Dries fast. Will look good as the camper top is separate from the truck. Could do it for less than $50 in materials.

They’ll use the oem color as it was when it was new. I know it won’t be the same, but it will be better than another color.

You think it can be done that cheaply? I have that website saved, and was toying with the idea of buying paint and using my compressor and spray gun to attempt painting it. I guess for $50 I’d give it a shot.

They come color matched in rattle cans. Plug in your color code. Gloss finish (2 cans?). 1 can of lacquer.

You probably do not need primer as your cap top is close match. If so go to big box.

Definitely do your due diligence on prep.

My canopy is for the light grey tundras and I have thunder grey. I’ve really been thinking about doing this with color matched spray cans, I just need to do more research.

Give that site a go. Follow directions. In my case, I blended in a side doink on my rear pass side bed panel. Its not perfect due to blending metallic. I’m sure if I was doing a top it would look very nice as its disconnected to the eye.

So, you bought the base coat in the color of your truck, applied it, and when it dried, you used this clear coat?
    https://www.automotivetouchup.com/spray_paint_clearcoat.aspx

Or, did you have to wear a mask and you used the urethane coat?
    https://www.automotivetouchup.com/spray-paint/spraymax-2k-clearcoat.aspx

    Thanks!

The top link clear coat (its lacquer). Yes. Bought and sprayed the base coat. Then applied the clear coat. Dries quick. Follow directions.

Not the urethane clear coat where you need to buy a respirator to make the purchase, even though you should at least wear a dust mask.

Got you! Well, their coverage chart says you need 3 spray cans of base color to cover the roof of a small car. Then another 4 cans of clear as well. My topper probably has double the surface area of a small cars roof. That means 6 cans of base and 8 cans of clear. That is $200 in cans before any prep material. Does that sound right?? I could buy a pint of ready to spray and see how good of a compressor and sprayer I have...

Your call. I think the coverage per can is more than what they quote, but don’t believe me. I ordered way more than needed due to their quote. I’d say 3 rattle cans color max, plus 1-2 lacquer clear coat. cans.

    Stuff goes far.

Yes I do. Now she is sitting in top shape again. Amazing how much work it takes to get things right most of which are items a mechanic wouldn’t mess with. Or, a specialty shop would $$$!

Now I’m into basic fluids/tune up maintenance hopefully for 2-3 years or longer of which I have a full oil stock up to last that long.

Only thing on the ‘look out radar’ is the steering rack leak and thats being a non issue drip for a few years. Res levels remain good.

I didn’t do anything to her for the first 12 years besides tires and fluids (done by a shop). Unbelievable this truck is almost 20 years old.

Let me know how it turns out.
I’m just really worried about actually getting it bolted up. I’ve tried aftermarket bumpers on my corolla only to find out they don’t event fit

So if I did like a whole hood it wouldn’t look blended and would match the truck pretty close?

It would look blended. Its not a perfect match. Your entire truck would need painting for perfection.

If you are ok with close and a different gloss level then its good.

I’m happy with my repair although at certain angles you can see the shading is different. Some angles look spot on, but thats color/sheen matching for you.
