Did my 3rd oil change today 15k mile. It so sucks dropping and installing the skid plate. Plus that crazy oil filter housing. My 11 Tacoma, 9 minutes. Filter right on top, no skid to drop. Loved it. This thing ....ugh!! So I today I decided to make a trap door in the skid plate. Thank you Mr Plasma Cutter.. lol. And I also changed to the Aluminum filter housing. Hopefully next oil chang will go faster.

I agree, OP. Changing the oil on these is pretty terrible. Skid plate is not overwhelmingly heavy or cumbersome, but unless your truck is lifted, it is tough to get under there. The oil filter is goofy... it is just goofy. Would a canister type filter be too much to ask for? And what is with the check-ball drain valve on the oil filter cap??? That is really the best they could come up with?

AND... the drain plug is about 1/4" off the very bottom of the oil pan, so, the most contaminated oil with the heaviest particulates will remain in the pan regardless of how long you let it drain.

TO TOP THINGS OFF... those three screws that go into the lower valence. How long do they expect the the plastic poppets on the valence to last? 3 oil changes if you don't go over 1/4 ft*lb of torque.

ALSO, you have 2 gallons of oil pointed directly at your front passenger brake rotor when you get the drain plug off.

FURTHERMORE... How is my fat American ass supposed to squeeze under this truck to get to the back bolts on the skid plate?

    Couldn't agree more OP.

Buy the RCI skid plate and the motivx oil filter wrench.

Use all the time you'll save to do nothing. And enjoy it.

    my solution:

    TRD skid plate
    1/2" coachbuilder spacers
    275/70 tires

I can now easily fit under the truck and use a clear plastic bin to drain the oil.

I had a BMW with the canister oil filter but the canister was topside near the radiator. much easier to deal with.

Two Rhino brand plastic ramps. I think they're 12,000 pound rated. $32 for a pair at Wally World. Mega easy access to the bolts, etc. Mega.

    Not many yet, mostly stock.
Harbor Freight floor jack 3 ton W/ coupon $ 99.99 will fix the clearance problem, majic creeper $46.99 so you can get that belly going. RCI skid plate and fotomo valve $49.00 for the filter and theres another valve that has a safety on it, I think the the engine pan bolt It's from jowlett performance. But I'm still waiting for Jowlett to have them made. May not help this moment but in the future. Nuts / bolts for thought

I’m only 160lbs lol no prob fitting under... my gripe to having to remove skid and that crazy filter housing. If I ever find an oil filter relocation kit with a spin on I am so buying it. This thing is just plain insane.

Lol same here. I fit under to install the wire for tailgate release.

I also use rhino ramps if needed. I used them on my 1500 Silverado to do oil changes before it had lower clearance.

The rhino ramp are way too tall. Just drive up on a stretch of 2x4. I’m 200lbs and can easily fit under

Hmm, lots of threads on this. Toyota/Lexus have been the easiest oil change for me, with the right tools to help.

Removing the skid plate is an extra step but if you raise your truck up on jack stands it's pretty easy after you've done it once.

My RCI steel skid plate and Fumoto valve are due to arrive by FEDEX this coming Tuesday. I’m using my last free oil change at the dealer that Friday and telling them to leave the stock skid plate off the truck and installing the RXI over the weekend. Looking forward to using legit synthetic oil at my own interval and knowing it’s done right (with a hell of a lot better protection for the power train)!

The skid plate (ARamirez73 you too??) on my 1997 T100, 4WD, is actually plastic. Light as all get out. And it face bolts with 4 simple bolts. I'd love to get back to that kind of simplicity.

Full disclosure. I just deal with the partial (my word) hassle of the Tundra steel skid plate. As I've said before I want to have a GOOD look around when I'm down there. Just to keep an eye on things. This is one of the HUGE BENEFITS of doing your own oil change. Another part of the "peace of mind" that comes from self performing.

True but if you aren’t dragging offroad an RCI is extreme overkill

If oil changes suck, a guy could just not change oil. I seemed to get away with like 30k oil changes in my old beater Camry haha.

RCI skid plate lol talk about buying a $300 solution where no problem exists.
what is so difficult about this stupid skid plate? it's like 6 little bolts. You don't even have to remove the skid plate, it's made to hang down off its hooks. If you do remove it (i do) the entire process of pulling it off and putting it back takes 2 minutes.

a tacoma oil change will spoil anyone...
