whoot.... I have finally done enough to my truck to make a build thread :)

But first, I have to give a big shout-out to my wife for being so supportive with me doing all my truck mods (with my previous Tacoma and now the Tundra). She is a special lady. Love you, babe :proposetoast:

So, I am starting with a 2016 sr5, texas edition, crewmax, 2wd, mgm - and here is what I have done so far:
A little back story on the tire and lift selection...
I wanted to keep the texas edition wheels, but I still wanted a lift and more aggressive tires (I also have to be able to fit the truck into the garage at work and into the garage at home). I had about 4" of clearance to play with at the garage at work so I figured I could use up 2-3" of that. For months, I went back and forth on different lift and tire combinations. If I went too big on the tires, then I would need wheel spacers, trimming, and a higher lift. But if I went too small on the tires, then they may not look right under the lift on the truck. I found Nitto Ridge Grapplers and I knew I definitely wanted those tires. I tried rationalizing the 295 60 20, but I don't think it would have cleared the UCA with a 50mm offset wheel. If I went with that size, I would have needed wheel spacers, a higher lift, and trimming. Then I would also be over the 4" of clearance. Then there was the 275 65 20 tire, but I wanted more width on the tire to protect the wheels. Also, a 34" tire would require a higher lift or more trimming. Finally, there is the 295 55 20. I had a very hard time finding examples of that size clearing the UCA with the 50mm offset wheel. But I did find an example on TundraTalk.

The next decision was to decide on the lift type and lift height. I wanted to keep the lift under 2" (so I wouldn't need UCA's) and have it still be affordable. I thought about adjustable coil overs (toytec for example) and adjusting them down to 2". But $900 on coil overs for my usage was a bit much. Spacer lifts are cheap, but you always read the horror stories about them. So then I looked into either the 6112's or the 5100's. The reviews that I read showed that the 6112's were more favorable than the 5100's, but my usage is strictly street so I chose the 5100's. At the 1.57" setting, the truck will still have a slight rake and look better for a 33" tire.

    Installation...
This decision always gives me anxiety. Who can I trust with my truck? I had a hard time finding off-road shops in the Austin area that had good reviews. I knew there was always 4 Wheel Parts, but they can be hit and miss. I have read many horror stories about that place. However, I did some research on the 4 Wheel Parts in Austin and they have favorable reviews. So I went with them.... and I am extremely happy. They did a fantastic job and did all the work in 3 hours. I got my truck back in perfect condition. They charged about $500 for installing the shocks, mounting and balancing, and for doing the alignment. I probably could have searched for cheaper labor, but I don't mind spending a little bit more to get quality service.... which this place did provide.

Anyway... so on to the pics...

    Before
    [IMG]

    After
    [IMG]

The lift and tires are subtle, but it makes a huge difference. I can definitely feel the 2" height difference while driving. This is how all Tundras should come... not just the PRO's.

This tire probably could have fit without a lift, but it might have required some trimming.

I still have plenty of clearance in my garage at home
    [IMG]

The original 275 55 20 tire doesn't have enough protruding side wall to protect the wheel. I bumped a curb while parallel parking and scratched one of the wheels. That sound was like nails on a chalkboard :frusty:

These 295 55 20's have much more sidewall and I should be able to bump a curb without scratching a wheel :)

The 295 55 20's fit perfectly on the 50mm offset wheel. There is about a pinky width of clearance between the tire and the UCA. I think a 295 60 20 would have rubbed the UCA.

The only rubbing prevention was to remove the little front mud flaps. and there is still about 1/2" of clearance.

There is plenty of room from the mud flap on the rear of the front wheel well. at least 1/2".

4WP also did a great job on the alignment. The truck drives straight as an arrow. There is no pulling or wandering.

I also took measurements of the truck before and after the lift and tires. I got exactly 2" of overall height increase. And, remarkably, I don't have the notorious driver's side lean.

I am impressed with the 5100's and the tires. The ride is smooth and quiet and much more comfortable than the stock setup. I figured that with the spring compressed, I would get a harsher ride. However, the ride is smooth. Maybe the increase in tire side wall absorbs more? The tires are really quiet on the highway. At 80 mph, you can barely hear them. Also with this tire size, the speedometer is now reporting my exact speed (according to my garmin GPS). On the 275's, and at 70 mph on the truck speedo, the garmin reported that I was actually going 68 mph.

I really love this setup and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a mild and affordable lift and tires.

    Thanks for looking,

    awesome! thanks :)

3 days to have the work done? sheesh... what are you having done to your truck? :) I couldn't imagine waiting for 3 days. It was bad enough to leave my truck there for 3 hours :)

get a build thread going after you get your truck back :)

    good luck!

Really it's just one day but I drop it off tomorrow night. They do it all Thursday and I can't make it back to Austin till Friday. Just a 4in pro comp lift and wheels n tires. Then the dealerships swapping all the badges for black. Nothing too big.

Your truck looks clean and that stance is perfect. You may have just sold me on the 5100s at middle setting.

What he said ^. I've been reading quite a bit over the past couple months. Planning on going the 5100 route and couldn't decide on mid or top setting either. Thanks to your pics and comparison mid setting it is!!

Excellent write up. You put a lot of thought into the mods and it's paying off... the truck looks great. FYI you've got about the same UCA clearance as I do with stock plat wheels and 285 55 Toyo OC's with no spacers on a 2.5 front level. Nice job!

@Netmonkey that looks awesome and I am on my way to almost that exact same set-up... My main difference is there 18" stock wheels- what do you think I can fit with the 5100's at the middle setting?

the 295/55/20's clear without any issue (on 20x9 +50mm offset wheels). there is tons of space.
after running this size for a while, I think I could of fit 295/60/20's. that size will put the tire very close to the mud flap and very close to the bumper trim. actually, I bet that it would rub a little bit. but not too much rubbing where I couldn't trim or massage the plastic so that the tires clear. my biggest worry is the tire hitting the UCA. I would have to find a shop that wouldn't mind trying the 295/60/20's to see if it is doable.

after I burn through my current set of tires, I am going to try the 295/60/20's.

for you... do you have the 18x8 or 18x9 wheels? the 18x8 wheels have +60mm offset and I think the widest you can go on those is 285's. if you have the 18x9 wheels that have the +50mm offset, then you can go with 295's. as far as height goes, you can fit 33-34" tires.

then, for certain you can go with 285/55/20. but I bet you could also go with 285/60/20. this might require a tad bit of trimming, however.

    EDIT:
hah... you have 18's. that would be 285/65/18 or 285/70/18

That is a great look! Aggressive and practical. Stupid question here: is the 50mm offset for that edition of wheel only? I have the limited factory 20's and can't seem to find about the offset of it.

    thanks :)

right, that is a 20x9 texas edition wheel with the +50mm offset. I think your limited edition wheels are 20x8 +60mm offset? you might not be able to fit 295's, but I bet 285's would fit. if you pull the tire off, you should be able to see the offset value stamped on the inside of the wheel.
