No Apple CarPlay? What aftermarket headset?

Hey everyone! Just got a 2016 Toyota Tundra limited trd off-road. I’m kinda upset that it doesn’t have CarPlay. And the entune oem headunit is atrocious and sound quality is pretty bad with the stock speakers. I had a 2016 Chevy before this and I loved the sound system and Headunit. But I’ve been wanting a tundra for a while now and love it other than this problem. Has anyone figured out a way to get car play on the factory unit and what are people running for aftermarket speakers with the stock unit. Also my iHeartRadio won’t work with my apple XS MAX. anyone have this problem. I even updated the unit today still no iHeartRadio radio.

 

I upgraded the factory system with amp and signal processor with focal 690toy components in the front and focal ICU 165 in the rear doors. Sounds really good with high quality audio files on ISB but inconsistent sound from satellite radio. My unit does not have Apple car play and no way to load it that I know of if it doesn’t have it built in. Wanted to maintain the factory head unit but am probably going to break down and get the kenwood DMX905s to get higher quality sound from all sources.

 

I am going to be testing a plug and play Android Auto and Car Play that will work on any of the Toyota touch screen radios. Once I install it, if it works I will be adding it to our website. Only down fall is that it is a $600 piece. Not sure if people will keep their stock head unit when they can get aftermarket for about the same. The upside is that you won't have to buy extra components to make the steering wheel controls work which can add another $100 to an aftermarket stereo install.

Just replace the stock with an aftermarket one. Pioneer, Kenwood and many others have Android Auto/CarPlay for under $300, plus installation. The sound difference with a new head unit even with stock speakers is night and day.

I have already upgraded my amp, speakers and added a sub, and I don't mind the factory stereo. I agree you can get a pioneer or Kenwood for a few hundred but to each their own.

 

Check out the Crutchfield website. They have a Sony CarPlay head unit for about $300 and they usually throw in the wiring harness or make it extremely cheap, and they’ll send you a pdf with installation instructions for your truck. I bought a cheap Kenwood single DIN from them recently and everything I needed was $80 and took 10 minutes to install.

 

I've got my sony unit listed in our classifieds. Probably the biggest Carplay/Android Auto you can get without going to the Halo 9 from Alpine - It's 6.95". It would look much better in a 3rd gen than my 2nd gen, which is why I bought it, and then abandoned it lol. Going in a much different direction.

I have a Kenwood DMX905s on the way....not sure what head unit you are getting but if Crutchfield sells it then search for it in their site and click on the link for the installation equipment that goes with that unit and you will have options for basic harnesses up to packages including antenna adapters, USB adapters, and the maestro unit to keep steering controls and also get some vehicle information to show on screen. I’m sure there are many places to get harnesses but I got my head unit elsewhere since it was discontinued from Crutchfield before I could buy it but I ended up getting the install gear from them since they had everything listed that I would need for the unit and my truck.

This is the kit I got from crutchfield. Took care of the main wiring harness, backup camera, steering wheel controls, USB adapter and aux input. There was an additional RCA y adapter for the aux in for mine, but that will depend on what brand you're installing.

Are you planning on keeping XM and/or the factory GPS antenna? You'll need the STO2 antenna kit for those.

Stock HU is pretty weak, you’ll wake up the stock speakers with any HU 50W output upgrade. Filter Crutchfield HU search by CarPlay and read reviews. Then replace all those stock flat paper cones, maybe amp/sub if you want next. Tech12V has served many of us well, James provides all the needed brackets and harnesses.

I am replacing my horrible entune 3.0 radio with a Kenwood DMX7705s. In the past I have always installed my own aftermarket stereos but I have been hesitant about my doing this one bc it is a new vehicle and bc of all the technology advancements and safety sensors. I didn’t want to risk messing anything up.


Long story short, after much researching, I have decided to give it a try but I am having difficulty finding information/video that lists/shows step by step directions.


All I am wanting to do is replace the factory radio with the Kenwood after market, be able to hook up my factory back up camera to this new radio, and have access to the usb input for the purpose of using Apple CarPlay. The people at Best Buy told me that I would need the following:

Are all of these (especially the PAC RP4.2-TY11 Radiopro4 Ty11) really necessary for simply installing the new radio with the factory back up camera attached? Any advice and feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

Do you have the JBL or non JBL version? And Entune 3.0 doesn't exist for the Tundra yet, though that's not really important. If you're running a non JBL setup, use the kit I linked above and that will be all you need to do what you're asking, plus the dash trim kit. I didn't need a voltage stepdown kit for my Pioneer, but you'll have to refer to the HU manual for yours.

 

I don’t know about all those specific part numbers that you listed but here is the Crutchfield install bundle for your radio and truck and it shows what will be retained from your factory controls. If you are just replacing the radio and using the existing factory amp (and is non JBL) then this will do exactly what you need. Those prices are with radio purchase so add $50.

My bad, I have a non JBL Entune audio plus stereo. Regarding what you said about that you didn’t need a voltage step down kit, are you referring to your factory backup camera? And the new HU manual should state if one is necessary? Thanks

That's correct - I didn't need any type of voltage stepdown to power the camera. It was plug and play with the harness I picked up. Kenwood could be different though.

 

Started taking apart everything today to install the after market radio and the only issue I have run into is that 1 of the plastic dash removal tools fell down below the dash where I can’t see or get to it. While trying to remove the center console to access this location I damaged one of the rivets. Anyone know what the size/part number is of these rivets?

 

Installed a Pioneer 4400NEX in my wife's 2016 4Runner literally 5 days after buying it because we hated Entune so much. Love the Pioneer, I'd absolutely suggest it especially at its current price point.

ETA: should have read the whole thread, that Kenwood will be a great upgrade though. Not sure what those rivets look like but this package has a ton of different types.

Does installing the radio void the factory warranty? I just purchased a 2019 SR5 and the guy at one of the audio stores I was shopping said it would void it. Have you heard of this?

 

I wouldn’t take the word of someone working at an audio store.....the dealership can tell you if it does but I would seriously doubt it.

If that’s true I guess mine and quite a few others trucks across the country have no warranty.

 

Yeah I’m going to call the dealership. He says Nissan will void the warranty on his Titan if anything aftermarket is installed.

 

It might only void the warranty on the headunit, nothing else. You're not going to be using it anymore so a warranty is pointless anyhow

 

Last week I took my tundra in for the recalls and specifically asked the service manager if installing an aftermarket stereo would void the warranty. I was told that it does not void the warranty. That being said, I was able to remove the factory stereo and then successfully wire the aftermarket stereo. However, I am having great difficulty mounting the new stereo with the installation dash kit that I purchased. (

Metra 95-8246HG Toyota Tundra 2014-UP DDIN). I can’t figure out how to attach factory panel clips to the dash kit, attach the plastic brackets to the dash kit, and then attach it to the new stereo. I am trying to not rig anything as I want to make sure that the stereo is securely fastened. I can’t believe how much trouble I am having trying to mount this damn thing! Any advice would be most appreciated.

 

I don't remember which brand of kit I got from crutchfield, but some of the holes on the stereo didn't line up very well with the sides of the dash kit. I don't have a good suggestion to help except check the pictures on Amazon for hints on how the pieces go together.
