Max Payload issue - help

I see mentions of wheel/tire weights as a factor in payload/hauling capacity.
Not to sound daft... just genuinely curious... why would they be a factor? They're already "on the ground"... not "weighing down" the suspension, frame, body, etc.
Don't do a lot of hauling, just occasional towing...

I thought that this was the crux of it? Have the other Makes adopted this? I thought that standard is what caused the discrepancy. I look at some of these trucks like the ranger, Colorado, etc, and the towing/payload rating for those things are absurd. I would never tow something that was more than double the weight of the tow vehicle. Anything untoward happens and you are just a passenger in the ensuing mess.

 

I find it really weird how Toyota figures out the payload my sticker has mine at 1510 pounds. The Crewmax has so much difference in payload compared to my Truck which is a double cab Sr5 Upgrade package 4x4 and I do not have the TRD Off Road package.

 

Correct. Airbags will technically DECREASE your payload. As you are now carrying the weight of the airbags, also.

Your truck has a maximum GVWR for it's class - that's the max weight your truck is rated for while it is loaded. Then you have the curb weight of your truck, which is the weight of the truck unloaded. The payload is the difference between those two numbers. So, if you put bigger tires on, your curb weight goes up (your truck is heavier unloaded). So, your payload goes down. Putting those bigger tires on did nothing to increase the GVWR of the truck - it is what it is (it is fixed).

 

I'm of the old skool "better to have more horse than wagon" mentality. With that being said My tundra has the upgraded TRD 16" brake kit and 4.30 rear end. I had no problem pulling or stopping a 20' trailer with a 35 horse Kubota tractor and all it's implements (roughly 9000lbs) through the hill country of Texas. I think you will be alright just going to the beach a couple times a year if you add the weight distribution hitch and drive it with sense. Just load the heavy stuff in the rear of the trailer if you have to.

 

I'm at 1185 lbs on the door sticker minus 142 on the modifications sticker so my cargo weight is a huge 1,043 lbs! That's for a 2018 1794 CM 4x4. I didn't buy it really for hauling or towing anything but I like the idea that I can if I need to (not like it would be anything big anyway ... maybe an ATV or something).

 

I thought that SAE J2807 added 250 lbs for the driver and one passenger as well as 100 lbs for the hitch weight? That should be taken into consideration with the payload talk correct?

 

I was off by 20lbs, I'll take it!

Is there anyway we can put that into a sticky or something? People are thinking they may be over when in reality they may have several hundred pounds left to play with.

Thanks ... saw the revised comment after I posted. Still kinda silly that my 1/2 ton truck has a little over 200lbs cargo capacity than a 2-series. I'm thinking these numbers have to be extremely conservative ratings.

 

Part of the issue with the sticker rating is the stupid passenger car tires Toyota puts on their trucks.



Put some Load Range "E" rubber on it with airbags, a trailer brake controller and a weight distribution hitch and you'll be fine.

 

1,043 is such a low number for a truck. If I have my family with me - I think the 5 of us ring in at about 800 lbs - and when my kids grow, we will eclipse that number. I won't be able to take my family with me in my effing truck.

 

Yeah it's very low. Mine in reality is a little bit higher as the factory running boards were removed (which i'm guessing is the bulk of the additional 142lbs added). Only other options on top of the 1794 are the TRD dual exhaust and hard tonneu cover.

I'll be in Colorado in July. I'll take you up on that even with 33.5" tires and no performance mods. I live in Missouri btw.

 

I just drove 90 with my 4" lifted Tundra crewmax with over 2000 lbs of concrete in the bed yesterday. The truck barely notices anything is back there. Plus an air compressor and bunch of tools.

 

1265-75=1190. Lol don't get a bed load of dirt or sand unless you want a broke-back tundra.
