Gotcha. At least you are getting ahead of it. Would be nice if failed tensioner mfg. covered the cost of repairs.......

I'd like to thank all the people who posted their ideas and possible causes of the problem I occurred with this truck. It should be taken care of very soon. Maybe I'll be reimbursed for the failure of this part and my mechanic compensated for labor.

Update: The manufacture upheld their warranty and replaced the tensioner and the timing belt. I did have to pay the mechanic labor, but he's a good friend of mine and it was well worth it.
Since I replaced four of the coils, I replaced the other four today. I boxed up the oem coils and will "shelf" them with a big note on the box that says "these are ok" on it.

Wait...there's more.
Leaving for work this morning, truck fired right up, started idling rough, and the engine light came on. Took it to my mechanic, plugged the scanner in and #2,6,&8 cylinders aren't working as they should.(#4 was firing this time) Going to take the covers off to see if it jumped timing again.

Man this is bizarre. These are OEM Toyota parts?

 

The belt slipped two teeth on the passenger side bank. Very strange, indeed. All the rest of the timing marks are true. Though it could be something wrong with the cam in the head. My mechanic said that he has never seen this happen before. Two belts and tensioner pulleys go bad this soon? Unbelievable!
Dayco manufacturing...WTH?

 

I think at this point if he doesn't find anything wrong with the cam I would go with an OEM timing belt and tensioner pulley if you still trust the mechanic...

 

I just ordered them...now I'm gonna stare at the floor for a while.

 

I wonder if a bearing has gone bad and is causing drag on that cam? Could I be two for two?

 

Interesting. Yeah go OEM. I’ve heard good things about Dayco though.

 

Aisin is oem without the Toyota name stamped on it. Much cheaper. I only suggest either the parts from the dealer or Aisin. Good deals on Amazon.

 

Yeah, I dislike paying double or triple for Toyota (Denso, Aisin) parts but I do it because I dislike even more having the work fail.

Well, keep at it and hope you get things resolved soon.

 

I would go Toyota or Gates, nothing else.

 

I have seen aftermarket belts that fit great, but issue is the belts just a hair longer than the oem somehow and they skip. Cost sucks... but something like the t-belt i would say oem is theonly way.

gates is actually the belt i saw have issues.. granted it was a rav4 4 cylinder.. but every time youd start it up once you hit 2k rpm the belt would skip and off the covers came again

 

That sucks. Could be a bad "lot" from the manufacturer.

 

I guess everyone can make a bad belt here and there.

 

I have been thinking. Yeah I know that's dangerous... what kind of belt tensioner is used? I have never been inside one of these engines. Something is allowing the belt to be loose enough to jump teeth on the cam shaft. During the power pulse that belt has to be flapping around for some reason. I don't even know if it's a belt or chain.

 

Problem solved, running good , 30 feet, 30 seconds away, bad mechanic, .

 

Got my truck back today. I bought what I needed as far as oem parts. Hopefully this thread will help others.

Yes, it was a failed tensioner. I decided to use Toyota parts.
