Why is the F150 so bad mouthed?

Looking at trading up to a lot newer truck as we are now retired and plan on more leisure road miles. Our 02 SR5 V8 has been the best truck we have ever owned but with 207,000 miles we are looking for a truck with equal to or better than the 17 mpg. we are currently getting and more comfort. I do not believe any manufacturer's claims for mileage but went to the forums for getting closer to the truth. A new or newer Tundra was initially my first choice until I saw the mileage reports. The F150 is the best selling but why is it bad mouthed so much in other than the Ford Forums?

Granted I only got into a pickup a few years ago, here's what I've learned:

The 5.4 Tritons got awful mileage for some reason. One of my buddys dad's has an early 2000's F150 and he only gets like 12-14 mpg.

I had multiple dealers and guys with them tell me they were having problems with the turbos in the 2011-2013's (when the Ecoboost was brand new).

The newer ones have an aluminum body and that poses issues when it gets dented or dinged. My uncle does paintless dent, and said he couldn't pull dents out of the new F150's the way he can every other pickup with a steel body. Something about aluminum not returning to its original shape.

The guys that have had F150's previously will be able to expand upon the issues more elaborately, this is just my .02

I have some friends that have and love their F-150's. At least one had to replace his transmission before 100k. The others don't out many miles on them.
My one friend has a 16' and I will say I like the truck. Resale isn't like Toyota though, speaking of, where are you located? What do you plan on doing with your old Tundra? Haha

It depends on what EB motor you look at. The 2.7 gets good fuel economy, the 3.5 is less than dismal(15-17 maybe) and 8-9 mpg when towing. My FIL owns a 12' EB F150, two good friends own F150 EB (one 3.5 and the other is 2.7). It doesn't sound like you are towing much if anything, so I would be looking at the 2.7L motor. They are more snappy anyway. My buddies 15' EB with the 2.7 moves.

Since you have a 2wd, I can only assume you live in an area that has no harsh weather. The only issue that I see with the EB motor is driving at dew point. Please research that. Here in dry climates like Colorado....not as much of an issue. If you want to buy an EB, no BS, look in E. Texas to buy a new one. Hell of deals there.

    Would I buy one? Nope.

    Moto,
A friend of mine would shoot me if I didn't give him first shot at buying it. He's ridden with me a few thousand miles over 14 years and loves the truck.
Spark plug issues on the V-8 but I'm reading up on the V-6 twin-turbo 3.5 as I sometimes pull an enclosed car trailer. It sure looks strong and capable. A mechanic friend of mine reminds me over every beer "you have my cell #, I'll come and get you with my Chevy".

Good friend of ours owns and loves his late model F150. It's been in for several big warranty repairs, but... He's always been a big Ford guy, had a Ranger and at least one F150 that I know of before his current one. He made much mockery of my Tundra when I bought it in the spring.

Anyways... He also runs the local fleet for a multinational concrete company. Mixers, pumpers, 1/2 tons (Ford and GM), all of it. Two of their newer Coyote 5.0 F150s have blown motors in the last couple of months. Last time I talked with him, he stated that his next truck won't be a F150.

I don't blame your friend, everyone wants to buy a nice old Yota! Old Ford's, egh...

I'm only teasing. Seriously though the resale and dependability may be worth spending more in gas, depends on how much you drive it though. I didn't reach 9k miles yet on my 2014 I bought new in November of 2013. The mpg's aren't a big deal to me...

Kansas City, double your humidity. Tundra is a 4x4 and what ever we get will also be a 4x4. I get myself into too many locations where a push of the button trumps asking for a pull.

Oh I'm not sure where I got 2wd. Anyway, a 4wd EB will not get any better than a Tundra.

Again, research driving at dew point with the ecoboost.

Tested a lariat 5.0 V8, loved the ride and techs but at $56k is too much even after lots of discount. Thr truth is I was cold feet buying a Ford .

Me too. I have my old F150 to thank for my Tundra. If it wasn't such a POS, I wouldn't have cared so much for reliability.

That list is incredible. How can Ford continue to be a top seller with lists like this. You'd believe the rating services would gladly expose crap like this to get their consumer protection ratings up. No matter how loyal the blue oval boys may be, I can't believe they would not be hollering from the mountain tops to get this list under control.

I know you are bummed about Toyota's MPG, but I believe the main reason it hasn't changed is because they have something that is tried and true. Look at your truck, over 200k. If that doesn't make you a Toyota man I don't know what will!

    Stay with Toyota, do it...

They are top seller cause anyone can be approved for a loan with Ford. Like the commercial says " it's easy to get into a Ford" Here in Canada anyway, I sure a homeless guy can walk into a Ford dealer and walk out with a brand new Ford. I remember when I was 23 I went into Toyota dealer to buy a 2001 Tacoma used, and I was working at the same job for 3years and they still wanted a
co-signer. So had to get my old man to help me out. I met a couple college students couple years ago that had new Ford trucks and told me that Ford is the easiest to get aproved for and that that's why they went with Ford. They don't care how u pay as long as quantity is out there.
    That's my 0.02

Our work 2015 f150 Eco boost 4x4 gets 10.9 mpg towing our 2700 lb trailer on flat Florida roads. My tundra gets a little better than that towing my 3500lb boat.

Simply put, fleet sales makes them the #1 seller.

There is just a lack of options. My 2015 F250 6.2L work truck was purchased new what most people on here pay for a 2010 used Tundra.

Remember that if and when you ever want to step up to a 1 ton truck and they want 69,000.00 for the truck.

I've owned 3 Fords and had 7 transmissions. I've been driving Tundras since 2001 and never had a problem. Also, I drove my '07 across the country, loaded (600 lbs.+ or -) with a shell and 3 surfboards on top. I drove 70 - 75 mph and was getting 17 mpg + and -.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Ford's sparkplug issue was for the old 5.4 Triton Engine and it's long-gone.Back in 2010, I testdrove a new 5.4 F-150 before buying my Tundra. The real world mileage was no better with the 5.4 with 310 hp, than the 381 hp 5.7 in the Tundra! The Ford fan-boiz I know, are no different than GM's,they only know what they 'Ass'ume. You can bet the GM "Buy American" loyalists will line up the buy the new CHI-COM Built, Buick Invision! In this age of the Internet, there's NO excuse for customers knowing ANY less than Salesreps, in the dealerships, just takes EFFORT.........THAT'S the "problem."

Government buys a shit ton of fords. We've got 5 just in our work area. The cops all drive F-250s or Humvees where I work. It's rare to see a government Chevy or anything else driving around. Ford has taken over the fleet world.
