Any torque loss felt after installation of TRD dual exhaust?

Either way Magnuson makes a repair kit, guess I’m going to have to “fix” my exhaust.

 

The older trucks had a more touchy gas pedal making them feel like there is more low end torque. But it’s all the same on the highway.

 

Yes. Anything that allows you to tie back to the stock tailpipe. And don’t go smaller than stock on muffler in/out size.

Yessir. 3” is fine. But tie back to stock tailpipe. Whatever you do, don’t go 3” tAilpipe or duals. Keep stock tailpipe which is odd at 2 3/4”

 

Would removing the resonator change or affect anything other than sound? I swear Keith, if I'm ever on that side of the country I'm buying you a steak dinner.

I measured my stock exhaust, since it's on the bench right now. Two pipes OD on the muffler inlet are about 2 1/4". Single pipe OD on the outlet is just a hair under 3". I'm not measuring the first 3-4" of pipe where it's welded to the muffler, there seems to be a pipe diameter increase at the connection points. I can't measure ID of the welded assembly. Are you giving measurements of ID?

 

I tried paying attention to this over the last few days. The only time I sort of notice this is going up steeper inclines in 6th gear under 60 mph. Higher speeds and flat surfaces seem to hold 6th fine. I don’t tow. If I did it may be more of an issue for me.

I’ve used Keith’s systems on a previously owned Tundra and was very happy with that exhaust as well. If my current Tundra came with stock exhaust, I would probably upgrade to the 10 inch BAM. But for now, the TRD is nice.

 

I agree- I’ve been watching the shifting patterns more closely over the last few days because of this discussion. As I said above, I have nothing to compare to other than coming from a 17 Tacoma, which didn’t have a clue what gear to be in and was sluggish. I don’t tow either, so for me the hilly back roads in the Tundra seem to be spot on with this, and it seems to shift when needed on the highway and long inclines. It reminds me of how my 07 Tacoma shifted with the 4.0 5spd auto- not always perfect, but checking most of the boxes. And you can’t deny that the TRD exhaust sound is really nice.

 

Usually when someone is speaking about Pipe it’s always inside diameter. As a plumber this always rings true to me. That can vary in something like copper pipe when it uses all the same fittings but the wall thicknesses change. But typically it should always be referred to ID. I think companies should offer both measurements though. But what good is knowing the ID if the OD isn’t going to fit into what you’re trying to do. I feel your pain

 

I agree. I haven’t experienced anything noticeable so maybe it’s just my driving habits. Even on the highway I don’t get downshifting on small hills like a few have said. Nothing that would keep me from getting the Trd duals again knowing what I know now.

 

There was a link provided in this thread earlier which did dynos tests and showed that the TRD dual exhaust had an increase in both torque and horsepower.

Just wondering why you wouldn't give that credence but assume Keith is right without any dyno numbers to prove it?

 

I guess I missed that link. I don't know. I have seen reports that show loss and others that show gains. whatever.... I don't care who is right. I got the TRD dual exhaust for the sound

 

The rpm where the torque loss may happen is too low for a dyno to measure - well below 2000 rpms - so it is based on driver experience. The graph on the attached dyno began at 3500 rpms.

I have not really noticed much of a torque loss with the TRD system (where and how I drive), but somebody who tows or is constantly lugging uphill may notice it.

 

Is this a water brake dyno?

 

Dunno. I was paraphrasing what Keith said in Post 55 of this thread. I should have referenced that in my post.

"Low end torque loss is not measured on a dyno. It is felt on the highway when in 6th gear."

 

Has anyone has noticed more sluggish and a delay in gear shift when accelerating ? Just curious if it’s an issue in both 2nd and 3 gen trucks

There is Deff a down low loss in tq. I did a custom side exit exhaust on my 2019 tundra crew max 5.7

i deleted the second cats
(for more sound )

did 2.5” pipe to a magnaflow true x muffler (high flow muffler with x-pipe built in)
Muffler is 2 in and 2 out with 2.5” inlet/outlet.

from there it’s 2.5” piping with nice tips right out the right side before the rear tire

 

I have no way of noticing any low end torque loss since I added the TRD supercharger at the same time as the TRD exhaust. If there was torque loss, I'm sure the supercharger has compensated for it.

 

I kept mine in place when lowering the rear suspension forced me to create a turn down dump ahead of the axle, we angle cut the pipe and rotated the resonator 180 degrees. It sounds pretty good, and I didn't lose any low end power.

My new Dirty Deeds cat back will utilize a new OEM tail pipe that will reach beyond the rear axle, it doesn't have the OEM resonator.

 

I can attest to this, I had two different sets of duels and got rid of both for the same reason. Very happy with 8 inch Ba muffler

 

I would love to hear a sound clip of this setup. I did a Magnaflow muffler swap and the drone killed me. I wanted the biggest muffler for the quietest sound but still have the straight through performance. I think the muffler had a built in Y and a chamber. Either way, it lasted 1 week then I got the TRD exhaust (my first choice). No regrets!

 

That’s a worthless dyno plot for all but race car drivers. My truck rarely sees 3000 RPM. What’s important is how it performs at 1500-2500 RPM highway cruising speed. Mine shifts down on a small hill now that I have the TRD. It didn’t do this before.
