Any torque loss felt after installation of TRD dual exhaust?

Low end torque loss is noticed when cruising down the highway. Not when accelerating from a light/stop sign.

When running stock exhaust manifolds there is absolutely low end torque loss when switching from single exhaust to dual exhaust.

I’ve found thst an X pipe reduces this loss better than an H pipe does.

But there is no better way to gain low end torque rather than slightly lose it than by installing a properly built single exhaust such as our standard 8” system.

 

Okay so you're saying the X pipe on the TRD will reduce the loss, but still not be as effective as a single outlet exhaust. Question, is the standard 6" system going to be louder than the TRD duals? I like the TRD dual sound, but I want a bit more noise. I'm assuming the 8" system is the same loudness as the TRD duals.

Correct. With stock manifolds, no matter what you do, a single exhaust built correctly will always make more low end torque than a dual exhaust.

And actually the 8” is more aggressive on the throttle than trd. Yet quieter than trd cruising down the highway.

 

Good to know. How about the 6"? How much louder will be be compared to 8"?

 

Overall sound isn’t that much louder. The 6 is slightly louder. Slightly higher pitch. And from inside the truck you can hear it slightly more. But basically they’re the same thing.

 

i didn't notice any loss in low end torque when I added the TRD dual exhaust. however, that doesn't mean that the low end torque didn't go down. i just couldn't tell. really, i think that putting the truck on a dyno is the only way to know for sure. Keith @dirtydeeds says that's the case and i would believe him since he is the exhaust expert around here

however, with the DAP tune, all of that is moot. any torque loss is nullified by having the tune. the better throttle response and the faster/firmer transmission shift points alone make up for any torque loss that the TRD dual exhaust may produce. and the performance improvement is noticeable at all speeds; from a stop or at highway speeds.

 

So what is required to replace a TRD exhaust with a 6” system?

The TRD dual exhaust has slighter lower torque at lower RPM. In evaluating it, I would bet it doesn't hold a higher gear as well as the stock exhaust when towing. This is inherent in the dual exhaust setup. It likely makes slightly more hp on the high end but this is rather meaningless for towing. Really makes me wonder why the TRD Pro is always the truck that gets evaluated by automotive media for towing tests. Dyno a stock truck and one with a TRD Dual exhaust. Peak torque likely shifts slightly higher in RPM range. Good for high speed, not so good for longer distance towing.

I just replaced the factory single side exhaust with a TRD dual exhaust and I can confirm there was a very noticeable low-end torque loss. With the single exit stock exhaust I could hit the tow/haul button and burnout my 35" Toyo's easily from a stand still. With the duals, there is no burnout possible, just a mushy gas pedal. It sounds great at 5500 RPM flogging it on the highway 60 to 80 mph, but I don't do that too often.

My 2016 DC is running factory manifolds on the 5.7L w/4.30 gears, nothing extra. Maybe long tubes would change this torque loss. But I'm trying to stay 50 state legal, so no long tubes for this truck.... yet. Contemplating going back to the stock exhaust. I knew this was a gamble and I was willing to try it. I'll give it another month to see if it grows on me or not.

 

I’ve drove a 2018 with and without the TRD exhaust, I can’t tell the difference. The only way that I would have known that there may be a difference is by reading this forum... still can’t tell the difference. I know that by reading this forum both the TRD and the Dirty Deeds are both great exhaust and both have there followers, but so does Flowmaster, Borla and others have a fan base also. The TRD CAI doesn’t do much either... except look bad ass!

 

I also didn't notice any difference on my test drives. Granted my previous vehicle was a 4runner so any Tundra feels like a rocket compared to that. I don't tow anything - maybe I would notice something if I did.

Yikes! Would hate losing that much torque on such a vehicle. I will have to go BA muffler or BA TRD replacement system when I get my Tundra.

I stand corrected! NO POWER loss from TRD system. I wonder why some people are saying they are losing power? A catback shouldn't change the power band. I know adding headers or removing cats, can change power delivery (make torque peak at a higher RPM).

 

I just bought the TRD duals from the 40% off special, and installed it two days ago. I had 22k miles of all sorts of driving, including 40 min cruise to work. I've driven a few hundred miles already, and can tell no loss of power, on any end. Even cruising down the highway feels the same.

 

This is all anecdotal. Anyone have dyno information.

There is some older tests as well on the internet. Takes a bit of searching but the data is there.

 

My butt dyno says no power loss with my TRD exhaust.

 

Low end torque loss is not measured on a dyno. It is felt on the highway when in 6th gear.

Every single tundra with stock exhaust manifolds that I’ve ever installed dual exhaust on, trd or otherwise, has lost low end torque.

Trd will gain 3-10hp and 10-20tq to the rear wheels over stock. The power curve does not move. It remains the same, just more.

You can minimize the loss with an X pipe. But it’s never the same as a single exhaust.

Look at the dyno posted above, the reading starts at 3500 RPM.

I don't understand how you guys can say there was no low-end torque loss. It was clear as day to me on the first 50 ft after I switched to duals.

 

The measurable gains are only 2 to 3 percent, which I honestly can't feel, so the "immeasurable" loss is also something I can't feel.

 

The loss is there. You can tell because I’m low rpm situations, like on the highway in 6th gear, you’re stepping on the throttle way more to maintain speed. So much more in fact that the truck downshifts st the slightest hill. And that’s super annoying. All tundras do this.

 

@Tundradrenalin you say you can tell it from a stop and go, @dirtydeeds is saying it’s only at highway speeds. I can’t tell either way and I feel like I’m pretty intune with my vehicles. I’m wondering if this is more vehicle specific, maybe some trucks take it better than others. Just a thought.

 

So would just doing a muffler swap with a Magnaflow or Borla muffler be better than the TRD setup performance wise? My wallet likes the idea.
