275/70/18 on a 18x9 wheel OK?

I know that 275/70/18 fits good on 8" wheels but Im thinking of putting it on a 18x9 wheel.
The tire I am planning on using is Wildpeak A/T3W tire.

Manufacture specs say it can go up to a 8.5" wheel. So I am wondering how it would fit on a 9" wheel. Anyone have any experience mounting these tires on a 9" wheel?

My second tire choice is 305/65/18 but I don't want to due to possibly having to trim to fit them. I will be on a 3/1 lift. I also do not want to lose too much mpg or power.

 

I would say do not put the 275s on a 9" rim. You definitely want your tires to be a fair amount wider than your wheels to avoid curb rash on the wheels.

Technically it will fit but it will look bad and a pothole or hitting a curb will chew up your wheels.

 

Look through the wheel and tire setup thread. There are a few guys running that size tire on 18x9's. I would send a few messages and see how their experience has been. I was gonna do the same and had the same question as you and was told it would be okay, but some tire shops may not do the install.

As I said, it will fit but there is a good reason NOT to do it.

That tire is so close to the wheel's width that it offers little to no protection to the wheel. You could mount a 255 on a 9" wide wheel, doesn't make it a good idea. I have also been told it's possible to lose the bead during normal, every day driving when you go with such a narrow tire.

 

My wife has rubbed into a few curbs and never touched the wheel, and I have to admit I have too the first few days I had them put on, but the tire does petrude enough to protect the rim. I don't care for the fat tire look so that is why I went with the 275's. I don't see a reason not to unless your bad driver and have a tendency to hit curbs.
As for the bead thing, I've never heard of that.

 

More potholes than curbs. I can pull this truck into the tiniest of spaces, but a bad pothole will marr the surface of your rims. It will eventually happen.

 

If it wasn't worried about curb rash, will I be ok running it though? The truck stays on pavement also.

Not in the case you mention but in extreme tire/wheel mismatches. I should have been more clear, sorry.

 

Im still confused on what to order haha.. i need to make a decision in about a week.
I may try to get my tire shop to order me both sizes if they let me and test fit them before making a decision.

So you're buying new tires and you have a choice? I would agree with @Backslider, don't go against manufacturers max width. Look for a 285 or 295. I'd be more worried about losing the bead. You know how your underwear starts stretching out after awhile and starts getting a little loose? Well one time I tried buying one size smaller. Can I put it on and wear it? Yes. Is it too tight and uncomfortable and my balls are at risk? A little bit. Do I recommend? Hell no.

 

Shit. I just ordered 18x9's last night and my tires are brand new 275/70's. Im glad I saw this thread - I'm hoping they'll cancel the order for me.

What tires did you order? Don't forget each tire is a different size. So make sure to check the factory specifications.

Well, my 9" wheels will be here on Friday and I'm going to give it a shot. I'll post back here with my thoughts after they're on. I only put about 6k a year on my truck though so it'll be a small sample size of driving compared to most.

 

I think you'll be ok. Seems fine on Bigoltater's. My point to OP was if he was buying new tires anyways, might as well buy the correct size. I think .5" will be fine.

 

Take some pics of how much the tires stretch on the wheels. I think you will be fine too though. Being optimistic here!

I'm scared to run bigger size and rub a dub dub. I really don't want to do any trimming if I can help it. I don't mind removing mud flaps though.

You guys think I'll have problems with those 9" wheels now with rubbing?

Runnings 275/70/18's on a 2.5" Level currently with stock wheels and 1.25" spidertrax. Was rubbing at full lock on the stock wheels so I removed the mud flaps and that seemed to fix it. Not sure whats going to happen now *sigh*

This is the EXACT wheel I have coming. Went with +12 to get me close to flush with my flares. If you can wait a few days I can give you an exact honest opinion but with my tires.

 

Kind of curious, what wheel did you go with? Couldn't find a ton of options
