I don’t know if the 05 has grounds in different spots. But there’s a ground on the front of the motor one each side with a 10mm bolt, I believe it is the ground for each banks injectors and spark plugs, I would pull that and clean it. That ground can cause many ignition problems

I think Denso is Toyota's tier 1 supplier for spark plugs?

Denso or ngk. Denso is what you get when you go to the dealer

No. It didn’t start after the belt was changed. Just driving along and started running bad.

How long ago was the timing belt done? How many miles ago?

I am thinking what Empty Lord is thinking. Seems like the coil packs and plugs are okay but not getting spark. Since it's all 4 on one bank its possibly a communal ground.

If that isnt it, I would look into the fuel injector wiring to see if they have a similar set up with one ground per bank. Misfire doesn't just mean electrical. If not that either I would suspect maybe the belt jumped on the cam and your valves aren't working in sync with your fuel/spark.

About 3,000 miles ago. I’m going to recheck grounds...

I went out and checked mine too. There is just one ground on the pass side connecting the engine block backside to the firewall. Couldn’t find another second ground, so assuming there is just one on mine.

One thing if you have a local Toyota dealer is swing by the service department. Out back where they work on the cars. Walk in like you own the place. Find the first tech and ask who is good with the older 4.7l v8. Explain it to him and get his input. Thank him and slide him $10.

My guy knows me but name now. He shows me things, explains how to do things and I save lots of $$$.

I don’t think it’s it timing belt related. It’s going to be electrical in my opinion. I wonder if your crank angle sensor bit the dust.

If he skipped time he’d have a slight tapping sound if it’s more than a tooth. The sound of the valve just barely hitting the piston. Any worse and it would be a horrible racket.

I do believe the 2uz only has one cam sensor so if it died he’d have nothing on both banks

Baring mechanical failure (like a broken cam, clogged exhaust pipe etc.) a miss is caused by one of 3 things -

No fuel, or improper fuel air mix.
    Insufficient or nonexistent spark.
Timing - fuel and spark not arriving at the proper relative time.

Sounds like fuel isn't the issue.
I'd pull a plug and see if it sparks when you crank the key. If it does than either spark or cam timing would be the issue.

    Just my 2 cents...

Interesting. This guys was a timing belt slip. I might have missed this but was spark confirmed on the half side of the engine coding or is it just missfiring? Wondering if the OP is thinking missfire means no spark?

Ya know?.. I never tried to notice if I had spark, checking the spark plug, outside the cylinder using the coil for “hot”....I feel compelled to do so now.

Just make sure you ground the plug. Jumper cables will work.

So if you don't have spark try swapping the ignitors while the plug is still out and see if you get spark

Confirmed...jumped four teeth. Luckily didn’t bend any valves.
Jumped due to tensioner pully failure.

    That sucks.

Recent timing belt change- Not replaced tensioner? or overdue timing belt/tensioner?

When the timing belt was changed they changed all the pulleys plus the tensioner. The tensioner failed. There’s a warranty on that tensioner. I asked the mechanic to go to a Toyota dealership to get a tensioner.
