Sound Matting - Detailed Installation

yeah, the stereo sounds much better, but i still hear the tires. I think that it would take much more matting to drown out the tire noise

 

Yep. There is a point of diminishing returns. In my case the wind noise is problematic up high. Nothing can be done to quiet the windows except argon double panes! Not sure that will ever happen.

 

A while ago I took out all of the seats in my 2003 Access Cab to make more efficient cargo space. I immediately noticed a lot more road noise, which makes sense without the mass of the cushions to deaden it, but it sounds like there is an actual hole or gap back there. It's not just noise, it sounds like there is a window rolled down.

I'm about to pull out all my stuff and peel back carpet and all to see what's going on, but I thought I'd do some research, too. I assume there is a gap for...drainage? Body flex? Some logical purpose, since everything on this Toyota seems solid and well-thought-out.

So before I cover up something, plug gaps, etc: Is there a gap to look for in the Access Cab area, and if so why is it there, and should I not fill it?

Did anyone reinstall the stock rear wall insulation after matting? Or leave it out? Im installing a subwoofer box the with of the wall and dont know if it will fit or if the im missing out on sound deadening without it

 

I put the stock piece back in. Made it a very tight fit with the sub. Next time I have those seats out I'll probably remove it.

 

That guy retired on Feb 1, you can't buy his products anymore. He said his website will stay up for a year, so the instructions will still be there, his methods closely resemble sound dampening that I've learned as an engineer working on sound sensitive things. I searched for a while and finally came up with an alternate material list. I will be installing over the next few weeks and will attempt to provide some pictures or lessons learned as I can.

Probably not, especially if you add your own material back there.

 

You were right, super tight fit even without the padding. Now i just have to figure out why i get so much white noise

Great write up. I did my sequoia door panels (skins and panel) in

MAT66 80 mil 72 sqft Car Sound Deadening Mat, Butyl Automotive Sound Deadener, Audio Noise Insulation and Dampening

this material. The quality is good for the price (I paid $90 for 72sqft), but I'm no expert either. Do you feel as though the road noise was drastically cut down? I feel like my stereo sounds better and tighter, but the road noise sounds about the same. The doors are MUCH more solid now and give a solid clunk when closing. I guess I was expecting to be able to whisper at highway speeds, but the change in road noise is negligible. Maybe I did it wrong, or need to cover another critical part to increase the deadening effect?
