I'm running 275/70/18 on my 5.7L crewmax. Definitely can feel the difference in larger heavier tires but not so bad that I'd drop money to regear it. If I went to 34 or 35 I'd definitely want to regear.

Plus even just going to 33s took about 2mpg off...35s must really tank it. It would really impact towing capacity/comfort too I'd guess.

Are 2nd and 3rd gen diffs that much different than first gen? If I remember right I spent about 400 on my gears and bearings/shims/solid collar and 400 for install. 2wd

I mean installation wise. Parts price looks about $100 more per diff but that's still a steep price difference on install.

I put 35 inch tires on my truck and I definitely noticed the transmission searching for gears. I felt it run a little on the sluggish side as well. I ended up going with Nitro 4.88 gears and what a hell of a difference!!

I paid 3500 for installation and parts. Gear kit front and back which cost me 1799.00 in 2015, and I even got an Auburn LSD for the 3500 price

Stock for now, but have TRD Rear Sway bar for it.
I just put 33's on my truck about a month ago. I have seen nothing different at all, except that it rides better and feels good to have new tires. I drove 100 mph on the highway passing cars and kept cruise at 85 and it ran like a top. Why go through all the expense and time just for 33's. Now if you were gonna do 35's or 37's or bigger, okay. Damn, keep your money. Unnecessary in my book.

Technically yes, but the tires are heavier, the strain on the tranny is greater, and those things are not factored into those 4th gear, 1:1 ratio calculations, also not accounting for automatic transmission slippage. So technically yes, but actually no. Just a reference.

Appreciate the response. Drive 70 miles a day back and forth to work, 60 of those miles highway with hills here in Maine.

Seems to be okay and only downshifts to 5th on a really windy day with a steep incline.

I bought the truck from Toyota with these tires already on it, so I wouldn't know how different it feels at stock 265/65/18.

    Generic calculation

Tire you have or want - stock gear ratio - stock tire size in inches.

    32x4.30÷32=4.30 - Stock tires

    35x4.30÷32=4.77 - 35" tires

    37×4.30÷32=4.97 - 37" tires

I’m running the stock gears on E rated 33‘s. And I feel like I want a regear compared to how it felt on the stock tires. I miss the extra pep in it’s step. Do I need to, no but I can tell the difference and it doesn’t hold the gears as long as it would out on the highway with smaller lighter tires. So I can only imagine with the 295s it would feel even that much different. It is definitely an expensive thing to do and will probably not pay itself off and fuel mileage. But I feel it would be easier on the transmission. So I like to drive in S mode out on the highway and try to limit the upshifting and downshifting and be in the right gear.

What about 295/70/18 with supercharger? Still benefit from 4.88?

I have 35” tires, I got 5:29 master kits for mine. I have not had them installed yet. The places that do it here are all backed up with work. The 35” tires make a difference dogging out the truck. It gets 11mpg in the city. Maybe because I live at almost 5000 feet altitude. I am also getting a supercharger so a little higher RPM will make it have a little more linear torque without dipping as much between gears. I am not one to baby my vehicles or try to get good milage. I have a new lifted subaru for that;)

I had a 2016 OR Taco that i did 33” on. 4:88 were the best mod I did. I live in the mountains so pretty much everywhere is a hill. It got 2mpg better gas millage and was generally faster. Felt safer 4 wheeling rock in moab.

The re-gearing is only needed when

    1. You went to say 35's . to realign the sensors an transmission shift points , an bring your truck out of fuel dump compensation mode.
    2. Maybe your still on oems an need a lower gear for towing in your climate
    3. Maybe you went to a 33 , but you added bumpers , winch an rack and your now heavier needing lower gearing for hauling just it weight around.

As for the bearing or internals being re-used in re-gear kit i'd only consider reusing if those components have under 50k miles on them an dont show signs of excessive wear. I.E maybe a new truck

I know i'll be eventually re-gearing to the 5:29s but im going 35s or 37s fully armoured an hopefully flatbed 4 wheel drive camper conversion.
