+25mm vs -25mm offset

I will be buying a 2017 crewmax in Oct. I want to put new rims and tires on it, and have them stick out just slightly past the edge of the wheel well. I know nothing about offset wheel or tires or whatever, as I've never done any of this before. What is the difference in +25mm offset, and -25mm offset? Guy at Toyota yesterday told me to look for -25 offset rims, but what I'm seeing on here is +20 or +25, etc. I will be running 18" tires if that helps. Not sure on the width of the tire yet either!

Good question that I know nothing about either.

 

Do not go with -25 unless cutting your truck gives you some sense of satisfaction.

I would stick with 30 or 35 (for 9 inch width). Mine are 18 mm wheels and even stock tires on them stick out too far.

 

First go back up to Toyota and give that guy a swift kick in the nuts.

-25 would be a pain in the ass and require a lot of cutting plus a cab mount chop.

Anything over +18 you will be fine. For instance, your trucks stock rims are +60 offset. +18 would be a 42mm difference, pushing them out about 1 1/2 inches further than they are now. This would give you that wide look and wouldn't require any mods to keep them from rubbing. Most guys with aftermarket wheels on our trucks run between a +12 and a +30 offset.

You just need to determine how far you want them to stick out past where they are now, and go from there. +18 to +30 is the perfect range IMO. Most would recommend fender flares if you are in the lower range of that spectrum (+12 to +18).

 

What? That mook from Toyota doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Think about it this way - the more offset you have, the more it'll go IN and the less offset (going towards the negative) the more it'll stick OUT. You'd be great with +20-+35 offset.
Rule of thumb - most people at Toyota know NOTHING except what they read in the brochure. Stick with people that have been there and don't get a commission from anything you buy.

 

Thanks Mike, I wont have the fender flares, I like the original body look. SO to have them stick out about an 1", 1 1/2" what would you recommend? Also do I need to use a certain width of a tire? I have no clue about any of this, just know how I want it to look!! LOL!

 

25-35 would be the inch to inch and a half spot if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah anywhere from +20 to +30 should be fine. Is your leveling kit 3" up front 1" in the back or is it 2-2.5" up front only?

You can fit 295/70/18's which is about 34.3 X 12 and not have to worry about extra mods. I run a 275/70/18 on my truck and they are just over 33.3 x 11 and I like them a lot (my truck is only leveled 2" in the front). Though I probably would have wen't with the 295's and a 3/1 lift if I had the 5.7L. They get heavy at that size and I didn't want to lose too much power.

they are going to put a leveling kit on it, just not sure yet if its just upfront. Is it better to do both front and back?

 

Just depends what you want to do with the truck and how much you want to spend. Check out ToyTec's website for an idea of pricing and options for our trucks. If your goal is simply to fit bigger tires and give it the leveled out look than some Bilstein 5100 shocks on the 2nd or 3rd setting will do the trick. If you're a serious offroader, than you might want to look at other options.

Something else to keep in mind is at what point you will need aftermarket UCA's. I believe its anything over 3", but hopefully someone else will chime in with that info.

 

I do use 4x4 during hunting season, and get off road quite a bit, but nothing too extreme. They are adding bilstein shocks, but not the same as those on the TRD PRO. (Guess a notch below those). I want the leveled out look, but only want about a 2" lift at the most.

 

Gotcha, yeah regular Bilstein 5100's will give you the leveled look and will be plenty for what you use it for. Not sure which ones Toyota uses, but definitely avoid a spacer lift.

I asked the dealership I go to about what they do for suspension, the parts guy tried to sell me on some leveling kit made by Truxx. And he tried to tell me that Toytec suspension was junk when I asked if they did anything with them. Needless to say, when I get my suspension done I'm just gonna go to Denver and have Toytec put it on.

 

Lol! These are the same people that add a pro comp or rough country lift and some stickers to an SR5 and call it a "Custom TRD Pro". Dealerships are pretty ignorant when it comes to what aftermarket parts are best for the vehicles and often try to go the cheapest route so they can save $$$.

 

And the cheap add ons are generally also the ones they can make the most margin on. It's not really their fault, they just generally don't have enough of a market to warrant getting familiar with aftermarket stuff besides wheels and tires. Or at least that's how it is with my dealer.

 

I wouldn't call 1" or 1 & 1/2" as slightly past the fender, haha. If that's what you want, for the most typical wheel width (9 inch), I would recommend 18 mm offset. I am assuming that you have the stock tires (275/65/18). I have 18x9, 18 mm offset wheels and stock tires (275/65/18) in these pictures. You could see how far they stick out. The left side tend not to stick out as far. These are the only two pictures I have before getting Bushwacker fender flares.

Be aware though. With that much tires out of the wheel well, you are likely to suffer dings on the side of your truck. Personally I went with 18 mm offset in order to match the Bushwacker fender flares I really wanted.

 

Do you recommend going with a +25 or +35 assuming no fender flares or lift? Im having a terrible time finding rims i like in the higher offset sizes. I like the vision fury which is +25 on 8.5" wheel, but im worried even that will stick out too far. Looking at my stock wheels they seem to be almost flush w the fender already. Appreciate any advice thanks.

 

Nah, it should come out about half an inch. Not enough to stress about

 

That set-up should be fine. Half inch narrower wheel will give you an effective offset of +6 (so the outer edge will be like 31mm wheels that's 9 inch wide.

 

For reference, I have a 3/1 lift. The tires are 285/65r18 and the wheels are an 18x9 with a +25mm offset.

 

I think it would actually be 41mm on the 8.5" wide wheel (+25 offset), which is still a lot. +35 on a 9" wheel drops it to 38mm. Ideally I want an 8" wheel with +35 offset to keep it sticking out only an inch but there are no decent wheels in that size. ATX 181 Artillery is that size but a few reviews online said the quality was crap.

 

Does your paint get dirty as hell or chipped at all with your setup? Nice lookin truck btw

 

I do get some splashes up on the side, no scratches or damage though. This life and wheel combo is relatively new so I might end up with flares soon.

 

If you werent getting fender flares, would you stay at the +25 of move up to a +35 ideally? I don't want flares at this point, and prob will not be lifting or leveling the truck either. Hard to tell in pics what offset is best. Thanks for your advice.

 

It all depends on what you want out of it. My wheels are 9" wide, which makes the 25mm offset stick out a little more. If you're really concerned about mud and paint damage I would err on the side of caution and go with the more positive offset and possible a narrower wheel.

 

How about looks wise, which stance do you think looks best? You like yours now or do you think more/less aggressive would look the best?

 

I personally feel mine are perfect for the look I want. I think any wider than this just looks funny, and flush with the fenders looks too subdued. I think 1-1.5" out is the perfect look.
