    These guys.

Usually it's pretty obvious if they're worn out but they sometimes stick in the holders.

Okay thanks that's what I was thinking. I saw it but didn't play around with it. I'll check it out tomorrow...
Anything I should be looking for in telling me that it's bad besides the sticking?

And I'll get actual pictures of it this time around.

I still think its the alternator failing and the regulator was just part of the problem.

    Here's another update:

Took it to AutoZone, had everything tested within the car. Battery was fine, starter was fine, alternator voltage regulator failed...

Before I give up and just buy a new alternator, I'm gonna hit those grounding point with a wire brush.

The only thing I see is that compared to my 2001 V8, that diagram looks a little different. Some points are missing on there that I see on my car such as the one attached to the firewall.

After cleaning the connections and the problems still there, then new alternator it is!

Frank, your truck is 18 years old. I would put a new alternator on it unless you're about to sell the truck. Why keep messing with an 18 year old part that is likely to fail at some point anyways?

No I definitely do not want to sell it. I love it even with the small issues it has.

The alternator is not the original one, PO replaced it. I don't know how old the current one is. But I do agree with you, after cleaning the grounds for peace of mind, I'll just buy a new one and update the post.

Oh I see. I just assumed it was the original one. I wonder if the PO went cheap on the replacement? Keep us posted on what you end up doing.

There is the alternator opened. Took me 10 mins to get her out, I'm an expert alternator remover now haha.

Cleaned the grounds as well, but didnt see anything too compromising, so I'm biting the bullet and I'm on my way to either advance auto or autozone.

Replaced the alternator, same issue. Unsteady needle on the battery gauge and the red battery light still pops on...

    What. The. Hell.

On my way back to advance to get this one tested as well...

I'm just impressed with how fast you're able to install an alternator. I've heard it's not that easy on our trucks. Apparently you're a pro!

New or reman unit? If it's a reman get the replacement tested before you walk out of the store.

Remanned. Went back and the employee told me it's over charging at around 15.5v. He also said it could be some loose connections or the way my battery terminals are connected. But if I wanted to I could exchange this one tomorrow when they ordered a replacement.

Before leaving he also mentioned that it could be that I'm using the 100amp alternator instead of the 70amp, which reading through here wouldn't make sense, right?

The car is also shaking a bit at idle now, don't know if it has to do with any of this...

Here is a pic of the battery connections.

Looks like the crimps could be a little better but I've had 3 reman Advance alternators go bad within months, one tested bad right out of the box at the store.

Those crimps need to be redone honestly ground to that battery needs a connection on it.. you can have high resistance there.

What do you mean by the ground to the battery?

I tested grounds by following this video. It seemed within the specs that this guys says.

    https://youtu.be/1bK0De9XOP0

I got .01v between both connections (+) on metal of alternator and (-) on negative battery post.

Ground on the battery is bare wire that is just tighten down.. that's not a solid connection. Like I said all those battery connections need to be redone the correct way. I believe Auto and advance both sell the tool for proper crimp tool with that gauge wire. Then use a jacket where the crimp.

I agree with Mike no offense but those connections are awful. Spend the money and buy premade battery cables, it is hard to make a good connection to the battery terminal without a highpress. If those connections are not your problem the will be in a few months corrosion will start very quickly. I have fixed lots of weird intermittent problems just by starting right at the source. Hope that helps

No offense taken guys, the car came that way from the PO haha. I just bought a new negative terminal as the old one was heavily corroded. I'll replace them too.

    Update:

Decided to check some wiring between the battery and the alternator with my voltmeter, here's what I got with the car switched on.

    Battery: 12.3~v (kinda low right?)

Alternator: (this is with the negative probe on the negative terminal on the battery)
    Power Post: 12.3v
    Unhooked connector and tested pins...
    White wire: 12.2~12.3v
    Indigo wire: 12.13v
Green/Yellow wire: 11.8v (a little off but this is only for the guage cluster I believe)

Taking a lunch break now and afterwards I'm going to take the alternator back out and bench test it at AutoZone myself since I used to work there and am still close with the manager.

I also plan on buying what I need to redo those terminals...

    Be back in a few!

Can someone confirm that a 100 amp alternator instead of the 70 amp shouldn't be causing these troubles?
