I gotta say the local Toyota dealer did me good. They fixed another leak while in there. I must say, whoever did the black sealant had a steady hand because it about looks factory.

Yeah there are various ways to complete it, just depends on the tech I guess.

    Yep. I’m debating it.
I’m now over 60K since just taking a trip to Pasco. (60,500)
Toyota said they’ll still honor it though since it was recorded. So I’m not in a huge rush.

I have been following this thread for a long time and have taken photos of my Tundra engine for a while. I think I was looking at the wrong area for awhile, but I think my original engine has the black sealant. See attached photos. In one blow of one photo, you can see a clear bump of BLACK sealant protruding. At least it looks black vs grey to me. I am the original owner of the 18 CM, about 8500 miles. A little over a year in my ownership. This is a little different from what I have been reading where the grey original sealant leaks. Two engine lines, maybe Toyota is experimenting with the sealant? That's the gray sealant on yours.

Yeah it's the standard Gray sealant they have been using. The black fipg is very different in contrast.

...and if you’ve ever used the black sealant, you would discover that it’s ultra sticky and hard to get off your fingers, or anything for that matter. Expensive too!

Did my first oil change after both sides were repaired and had a fair amount of metal shavings in the oil filter.

How long did you wait after the procedure to change your oil? My dealership said normal intervals . I was thinking like 500-1000 miles and the tech told me like 5000 miles.

This is why I mention on here to do an oil change at a very short interval after this repair .I did two short oil change intervals and then just changed the filter twice at short intervals. I kept doing it until I didn't receive any more trash in my filter. Found a fair amount of gasket debris as well.

I wouldn't go more then 500 miles after the repair.

Just over 1500 miles. Plan to do again in another 1000/1500. Engine runs strong and it idols smooth.

    Didn’t have any gasket reminets.

Update... just picked mine back up, two days @ dealership, 9 hrs labor(?) Looks like they took care of both sides, based on evidence of black sealant. Also added the parts list in case it's of interest to anyone. N/C for everything, fully warrantied. Loaner vehicle was a 2018 Camry... ugh, felt so uncomfortable being so low to the ground, LoL.

Dropped it off at dealer on Monday, picked it up today. Just a short 5 mile drive home, but so far so good - it sounds & performs exactly as it did before the reseal.
Can post pics later, but I can see the new black Flex Seal on pass side oozing out a bit.
They wouldn’t do drivers side, too. It’s not leaking but I asked if they could do it while they already had it ripped apart. They said they can’t - they have to send off pics to big brother & that side isn’t leaking.

Got to talk to master tech before they started. Which was good - quelled some concerns.

I guess I’ve had a good experience so far. They didn’t try to give me the run-around at all with doing the repair. I initially went in in Dec; they acknowledged the leak; degreased it & asked me to come back in a month. I thought that was fair. Went back on Mon & they took it for repair that day after inspection.

They would only reseal my passenger side as well, my driver side still has the factory sealant. They claimed they couldn't fix something that wasn't an issue and that they were not going to disassemble the truck further. Only time will tell if it becomes a problem on that side.

I not really into cars, but that looks awesome!! Imagine that in Blazing Blue. Sharp. Looks like the Type R has some competition. Also off topic but, If Toyota can design sweet cars like this and an awesome remodel like the new Rav 4, then WHY is the Tundra not receiving the same love and attention? =(

New guy here. It took me a while to set up an account because I don't do many mods. But I do find good info on the sight. Thanks to this sight I have been keeping an eye on my cam towers. My warranty is about up and I noticed my driver's side had a little seepage. I went to the dealer expecting a hard time because it wasn't a bad leak. They checked it out and the service rep said it's leaking and they can take it in now because the master tech was in that week. They would not cover the passenger side because it was not leaking. I told her If they are taking out the engine I want both sides done, I will pay the difference if I have to. They agreed and it cost me $400, i don't want to go through this twice. They put me in a 2019 Tacoma trd sport (very nice but small) for a loaner for 3 day's. So far no leaks and the truck is running just as smooth as it used to.
I have almost never had good experiences with dealerships and their service departments, but I was blown away at how nice they were and how smooth it went. I had some sleepless nights just thinking about them tearing my engine apart but so far no issues.

That's awesome how they handled it, my dealer wouldn't let me pay the difference to complete the driverside at the same time. You got lucky!

What dealer? Someone should compile a list of the “good dealers” as far as getting the towers done, and yours went above the others in doing the other side for $400.

A dealer in CT. I haven't had good luck with their service dept. in the past with other vehicles and was/still am surprised how well it went. Maybe they have changed their ways.I usually do my own maintenance but this is way beyond my expertise.

Just wondering if anyone is seeing this issue in any MY19 engines yet? I realize we are still early for the 19's, but I figured there must be a few out there getting some mileage on them.

This issue was the only one to give me pause when doing my research, however, it wasn't enough to push me towards another brand with potentially larger problems.
