^^^from what I understand this is the best way to go. Retain manual volume and HVAC controls on the newest model.

That said, I’ve had it for about 2 weeks and I’m seriously considering pulling it out.

Don’t get me wrong it’s cool and all BUT the best way to describe it is “janky”. Everything works (except the mic for hand free phone which is a huge pain in the ass) but nothing works with a factory ease. I’d say the UI is about 90% there just not where I would like it.

TL:DR - stick with factory or go name brand aftermarket HU until they make some more tweaks. Maybe gen 3 will be the one they get it right with.

See this is what I'm worried about the janky clunky feel it will have but is the stock unit any better? I feel like the stocks basic boring blah feel couldn't be much worse

    That’s what I thought to ^^^

I’m giving it a fighting chance but we’ll see. Having a mic jack soldered on this weekend.

What did you black out the plastic with? Is your a/c vents blacked out with the same product?

The vent rings and steering controls only have the flat primer to change up the contrast from the satin around the HU

Deal was supposed to end Jan1, no idea now. imho, don't get the one with the big manual knobs at the bottom, that's gen1 (not to be confused with the gen of our trucks) and slow boot. The kid in his basement, actually I don't know who's doing it, isn't making software updates on them anymore. And don't get the gen2 with no buttons at all. If your HU f's up for any reason you lose all control, literally.

I have an SR5 too and I have the one in the screen I posted, gen2 with buttons. The top right knob controls the temp. The left two buttons above hazard control the +/- on the HVAC, and one of the right buttons controls defrost, they still work while the unit is doing a full boot. If you start the truck within 48h, it boots fast, otherwise it's gotta cycle on from the beginning.

There’s a noticeable improvement in SQ, the factory SR5 HU is gimped.

Get some decent plastic pry tools from Amazon, ya there’s a few YouTube vids how to remove the HU and trim. It’s mostly plastic retainers that pull and pop off, not hard.

Zoom in, it’s those yellow clips that wedge the trim pieces in. I think you can buy them if you lose any.

I’m mostly an Apple user and I find this thing can mess up easy like any android if I play with the settings. It’s the opposite of an iPad having things locked down because we can control so many aspects of the UI. Once dialed in, I’m more than happy.

Buy you’re right, I’d enjoy a tried true Pioneer, Kenwood or Alpine HU with CarPlay just as well too. It just can’t do all the things an embedded android tablet like this can. Can’t have both.

I would say if someone doesn’t care for video, games, being able to use any GPS app whether local map storage or data, Netflix, streaming Spotify or Pandora, etc, skip this.

Did you do the recent MCU update? I wasn’t having any mic issues but I read on fb it was a fix.

I don't know anyone with one, but I did see on for sale on Craigslist Denver a few days ago. Said he didn't like it so was selling it for a loss.

Was super excited to install my 13.1” today until I realized the stock jbl amp was altered (jumped out) to put in my kenwood so I had to take it right back out when I only had sound in 1 speaker...need to reverse that first

Many reports on fb this fixed the mic issue on the few who were experiencing it.

I can definitely confirm it does. Much more likely to keep this thing now. Added a hot spot today for easier connectivity. Seems to be working better.

Can anyone confirm whether this has pre amp outputs? I have a non jbl tundra and just bought the box and sub off the group buy. Just trying to figure out everything that I need before I start buying amps, HUs and LOCs..... if that's even needed.

These look so slick but I don't want to have to play games to get the thing to work. Maybe Toyota will upgrade the screen size in the next gen tundra. I have been reading some fb groups for these and they seem like a pain in the butt.

Not too much luck there, saw a sneak peak on one of the other websites and the new tundras appears to have the same old same 7-8” head units

The 2020 Taco, Tundra, 4R and Sequoia is said to have CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa. That should satisfy a lot of tech users. They should really update the Tundra screen so it sits partway above the dash like the 2019 RAV4:

    052DA95F-E5A8-42E6-BAF9-379931CC131F.jpg

And the sound quality, the current stock HU is so weak. Adding the 12” Android HU was a surprising improvement, probably the same feeling if you added a branded HU.

That’s the thing with these Android HU’s, it’s like you open the box, here’s your radio, figure it out buddy, no instructions lol

The Facebook Tundra Tesla Tips & Tricks Group (there’s only one) has really evolved, these topic links are gold:

    CA6B26DD-87DD-4228-BB33-3F6844007688.jpg

Clicking installation leads you to a series of YouTube vids:

And asking a question there gets you an immediate response easily from half a dozen people. I wish that existed even when I installed last fall. I’d buy again, and won’t go back. It’s like having heated seats in cold winter, you always want it going forward.

It’s really if you’re willing to put in the time or know someone that’ll install it for you. Understandably not everyone wants to go through it. The drop out return rate is pretty low now. So while it might look intimidating that every other post is a problem solving issue, those are newbies, there’s probably over 2000 owners in the group quietly enjoying their units.

Toyota knows how to do it because they offer a big screen in the Prius. It’s actually a pretty good HU
