Hey guys, little worried about what I saw when I changed my oil today. This is the 3rd time the oil has been changed. First two by the dealer and the third by me. Truck has 14k on the mileage. So when i pulled the oil canister that has the oil filter inside I noticed a lot of “grime” on the inside. 482DAC3C-0185-4BEA-8E7D-C0C23C1A3F17.jpg0D4579DF-E9FB-4751-9F47-D7B2B223F0BD.jpg

It didn’t feel grainy. Not sure if this is normal. I also had some grime all over the walls on the inside, where the canister goes into.

I know this is the are where the gunk goes to, but this seems like an excessive amount of crap. But wait,
there’s more! After I cleaned it up I noticed a crack on the inside. Hers a pic. In the other pics there more of the grime on that side where the crack is.

I hope this isn’t something I need to worry about but something doesn’t seems right to me. What do y’all think!?

Most likely the dealer never changedthe filter. And you know they didn’t wipe out the bottom of the canister either if they did. They are notorious for being too lazy to pull the skid plate off and change the filter. It’s easier for them to just collect the payment and not do anything. Hopefully they at least changed the oil.

That’s could be a possibility. Look at the crack I just posted up please. The oil did seem pretty dirty for only 4000 miles of use.

Is the crack detectable on the outside of the canister?

The pic on the inside almost looks like from manufacturing, or that is was repaired. If not noticeable on outside and not leaking, probably ok. You may want to get a replacement for next oil change.

That may just be casting slag on the inside of the block there. Good time to upgrade to the aluminum canister. I’d also be tempted to take it to the dealer and ask them WTF!?

I’ll tell you this, I never used the free oil changes. And my oil canister never look like that. I change the oil myself every time.

The dealership broke the part the filter attaches to on mine. Luckily I had left it overnight cause they called me the next day and told me all the oil from truck was on the shop floor when they opened up. Had to replace the part. They over tightened it till it cracked it. They might have done the same. They told me they would repair for free. I laughed and said of course you will. You broke it and you are the only person whose ever changed my oil ever.

I suggest that anyone who uses the dealer for service, mark the oil drain plug and canister position to confirm whether they removed it or not. Even a little dab of silicone at the joint will tell you whether it was removed or not.

Good idea. Also check for cracks on the outside of where it attaches as that part is weak apparently.

That’s so sad you even have to recommend this.

On a side note, I would do this at any dealership/quick lube place. My brother used to manage a quick lube, and the stuff he seen and was directed to do was flat out wrong. He would suggest to anyone to always do your own oil changes at all cost.

Yes. Definitely sad, but true. I no longer have the dealership changing my oil and they owe me till 100k. I’m at 60k. I probably use better oil too.

It’s very sad. I took my truck in for its 5000 mile service and ask them to change the oil and grease my prop shaft. They didn’t do either. They said I wasn’t due till 10,000 but I specifically asked him to do it. On the paperwork it said they lubed my prop shaft. The paint was still on the zerk fittings.

A while back I didn’t have time to do some of this stuff on my previous vehicle. I took it to one of those easy lube places. I watched them do the work. I also sort of made friends with the guys. I literally would watch them remove the filter and change it. Also since I used synthetic I watch them crack open each bottle and listened for the snap of the plastic separating. I had heard that they will refill the synthetic bottles with plain old oil so that they could pocket money. How do they live with themselves?

It’s almost safer to go to an easy lube place where you can watch them do everything.

That's a lot of grime for 14k, I'm at 42k and mine is clean as can be. I'm with everyone else that they never did oil changes, filter wasn't changed or maybe really cheap oil.

I’m in the same boat as Sean. Asked the dealer to grease all zerks. Thought they did it. But the paint was still on them. Found out at 50k. Was not happy. I do that now myself.

I had to take my '06 to a Toyota dealer (who will remain nameless) for replacement of the Takata air bag. I asked if they would rotate my tires for free. Response was "sure". I marked the left front tire with a small dab of fingernail polish. (I have a lot of estrogen in my house...so finding the polish wasn't a problem....but I digress!) After picking up the truck from the dealer, I noticed the left front tire was never rotated. Guess they rotated the other three!?:)

What is a “casting slag?” I wasn’t aware that the piece could be changed out. Wouldn’t that fall under a warranty?

Do you think I should be concerned? It felt pretty ruff. Do you think that could be why there was so much grime?

Victor, I just read your post like Billy Mays, "Wait, there's more!" lol

You're in luck, I switched to an aluminum cap last change and haven't cleaned out the OEM plastic one. I don't have that amount of grime in mine, unless what Sean suspects is right, they've never changed out your filter and that's the truck's lifetime slag.

Really glad I know my service team at my dealer and the same guy does all my work. I’m very lucky. I did start changing my oil out of self satisfaction starting last Dec since my free ones are gone.

Lmao! Me and my girl still quote that whole scene. What aluminum cap are you referring to? I hope it is just from them not changing out the filter. Hope that crack doesn’t have anything to do with it.

I just did my first oil change yesterday. 5000 miles and I could take it to the dealer but won't because I don't want my truck mistreated and molested. I had everything and it was very easy to do. I will stick to doing 5000 mile oil changes. Waiting 10k allows for th oil to get too dirty. I'll feel better off knowing the oil will be fresher. I also checked the cam tower and it was good. 20190207_165440.jpg 20190207_164820.jpg

Maybe I’m using the wrong terminology. But when they cast aluminum parts there is usually at least two parts to the mold or it’s poured in a sand mold. All the seams and point of pour need to be cleaned up after the mold has cooled. Sometimes they don’t clean it up perfectly.
