I was thinking about this coming back from my third trip to Napa today haha

I bought my truck for $9k roughly (traded an 08 RAV4 for it) and then put about another $5k into it. People are confused about why I put so much money and work into this “old” truck but I love it.

if I had the opportunity to buy my truck again at $15k I would. Less than 160k miles, TB Waterpump, suspension, wheels and tires, plugs etc. runs good doesn’t look terrible and perfect size.

would you all buy your truck again if you had to do it over or would you pass on all the work and money you’ve spent?

I bought my truck when I needed a truck. That was a little over a year ago when prices were absolutely stupid.

I love my truck and realize I greatly overpaid for it but still, for the time, I didn't get a terrible deal, and I do love my truck. If it suddenly exploded and I found an exact replica at today's market value, I'd rebuy it for sure. But not at last year's premium.

Hard to say. There are times I get tired of driving a 22 year old truck. Even with constant maintenance it's showing it's age. Around town, I prefer driving our RAV4.

If something happened to mine I'm not sure what I'd buy next.

I'd 100% buy it again at the price I paid for it. I'm not so sure about what it would have costed in today's market and whether or not I'd still buy it, given the extra costs though. It has literally been the best truck I've ever owned. I thought my first gen Tacoma were the best before this. So maybe I'd have just stuck with those, but their prices crept up too.

100%. I'm a little less than a year into owning mine, but I love it. I'm only 36, but I'm pretty old at heart and the more analog something is, the better. I love popping the hood and there's a ton of room in there. I love the size and the utility of this truck. Works great for a family car (I have a DC) when we need it to. Hauls firewood when I need it to. Starts when I need it to. I'm sentimental about it though. I was in school for a long time and had to drive a corolla. When I finally got done I bought this truck as my present to myself. And it'll be a classic soon. No rust, paint, body, interior in 9/10 shape. I bought mine for $14k and I wouldn't sell it for less than $20k. I'll drive it til the wheels fall off.

I have only had my Tundra about 2 months. For how I planned to use this truck, I would absolutely buy it again. I have a 2019 Silverado LTZ crew cab 4wd truck which I use for traveling and trips. Really enjoy how it works, but quite large to run short errands and trips to the landfill for yard waste, etc….. My Tundra is the perfect size for these uses. In addition to the perfect size, I can’t overstate how much I enjoy the V8 engine and transmission. It is the ideal truck for what I need it for.

I've had mine since new in 2001. But the timing belt is a PIA. I've done one (first one at about 70k miles) in the 104k miles, because of time not mileage, and it's due another one now with only 30k on this belt, but it's at 10 years now and according to the schedule it should be done. If it had a chain it would be a non issue. So that in itself would probably cause me to look elsewhere. My 2001 also does not have a LSD and that is really silly on a truck IMO. The last thing is the auto transmission, I still miss 3 pedals and wish I had bought a v6 with a 5 speed originally. The auto box is my biggest gripe, but it has been reliable, probably more than its contemporaries of the time.

I really lucked out on mine, for $7500, absolute steal relative to ridiculous califonia prices, so yes, absolutely. I refuse to have a car loan or be in debt

Honestly? If I totaled my FGT, I wouldn't run out and buy another one immediately. But I would always be up for the right one at the right price. I have another Tundra to drive though. If I lost both at the same time, I would re-evaluate my needs. Maybe a new Tacoma, otherwise probably another FGT. They are just too good of a truck.

$6000 for mine at 180k miles. Had to put some work in on the suspension and TB/pump is next but I absolutely would. Some very small cosmetics here and there but absolutely worth it. Hell I’d pay $7500 for the same truck

I paid $16k in 2005 with 99k on the Odo. It was pretty cherry, someone had been commuting in it. Didn't even have a trailer hitch.

I guess my question wasn’t super clear. Of course most of us would buy our trucks again if we had the chance. I was thinking more along the lines of “I’ve got 2x more money invested in this thing than it’s worth”. Is it worth it?

My answer now that it’s getting to be the exact truck that I pictured In my mind is yes but I definitely questioned it throughout the process haha

If i knew then, what i know now, i'd have told grandpa to get the same exact truck. Not wait for vvti or plastic bumpers. Luckily, he retired at the right time. Took him & polo to the store in it while he was here, and he was impressed with the ride from the new suspension, and said he misses the v8 (noise, not power).

But i've been dragging my feet at throwing money at it. So, i'm pretty happy with how its coming along.

Almost the same story here, I’ve had mine for almost 2 years. I wouldn’t sell mine for 20k, I don’t know what it’s worth. I finally learned the old saying “everything is for sale for the right price”. I think if someone waved 25k in my face I’d take it. Not that it’s the correct value but it’s what it would take. That being said, I doubt I’ll ever sell it.

Dirt Deeds injectors, Addco rear sway, AEM dry flow air filter, last ever set of Stan's Try-Y headers, Borla full custom exhaust, front level, wheel spacers, and lots of electronics.
That's an entirely different question. And the answer is more enthusiast vs utilitarian.

If you're here asking this question, of course everyone will say they would buy their trucks again. We're all enthusiasts of the 1GT.

If you asked a random Joe on the street who drives a Tundra because it was a truck they could afford, you may get a different answer.

I think most of the members of this forum are the kind of people who would dump more money than their truck is reasonably worth because they genuinely enjoy the truck.

I can't tell you how much I've spent on my truck on maintenance and upgrades. I could ball-park in the $7-8k range, easily. And there's still another $8-10k I want to spend on it. I'm planning on spending over $3k this year on speed parts and dyno runs alone. That doesn't include maintenance items.

Are there other trucks out on the market that have more to offer? Are there other trucks that are cheaper? More efficient? More reliable? You could argue a yes or no to each of those questions. But for some reason to all of us the 1GT has that special combination that makes us enthusiasts. Just like the Ford, Mopar, or Chevy guys.

I pass a lot of old white dudes driving First Gen Tundras around here. They don't seem to even notice me or my truck when I do the Truck Gang wave. It's just a truck to them. Some are beat to hell and others are average at best.

I've invested thousands upons thousands in these trucks and I'd do it again if it was between that or making payments on an iPad with wheels and nannies. I hate modern gimmicky BS vehicles and I hate their prices.

Bought mine last year for $8500, I've spent several grand on parts catching up on maintanance. I really like my truck, but don't know if I'd buy this truck again. I'd probably spend a few grand more an buy another 1st gen Tundra that didn't need as much work as mine did.

I bought mine in 06 with 120K for $6k. In 18 years I've put $8k into maintenance and upgrades and 190k more on the odo. Yes, I'd do it again.

I'd much rather rebuy my 2006 than a 3rd gen (or any brand new truck regardless of make). I like the fact that my truck isn't a rolling computer. And I'm glad I don't have all the nanny features. I'm smart enough to say "Oh gee, it started raining, I'd better turn on my wipers" rather than have the truck make that decision for me. The nanniest feature on my truck is probably the TPMS, but mine doesn't work anymore and I'm A-Okay with that.

Yes. I really enjoy bringing a neglected vehicle back to almost new condition. I don't do it for profit or anybody's approval. It is a hobby and marginally cheaper than drugs, I think... I also don't keep a solid record of costs because if my wife found out I would probably be 'unalived' real fast

Same boat as you all. I don’t think any of us need to justify it was just interesting to me when friends ask why I’m spending so much on this old thing. I love it and know they won’t ever understand

So, the titan would make a better overlander, just because the rear doors open 180*. Mine is 1wd with a computer dancing the rear brakes if i try to use any of the power. It WILL get stuck in wet grass. Maybe fine with a locker, but the tundra is already 3wd. And i do prefer the old school shift lever 4 speed over the titans toggle button shifter. Shift lever just feels better. The titan will have its day in he light, i think dad & i might rebuild the 5.6 for his q45, but that means i'll have a 4.5 to desecrate into a motorcycle carb'd 180* headered wailer for the truck. And i can use parts up to '15.

Literally exact same for me. Love my truck, look at pictures of it on my phone when I'm away for work, has always been there fore me in the //checks notes// 3k miles I've put on it since Jan. 2023, haha. So yes I'd buy it again. But with all my kids, a sub-$20k, excellent condition, 8-seater 2006 or 2007 4WD Sequoia that comes up near me is gettin' bought. (Draw up that Venn diagram!)
