So, why is the steering wheel offset compared to the center of the seat, by about 2 inches toward the door?

Maybe because there is a monster under the hood where the steering shaft must also reside.

It’s that way on quite a few manufacturers. GM is way more noticeable to me.

I am not talking about clocking. The center of the wheel does not line up with the center of the seat, it's offset to the left. Having to go around the engine doesn't seem to be a problem enough for me, there are steering u-joints shaft for that.

Okay, add a bunch of u joints to a critical steering component. What could possibly go wrong?:monocle:

Most vehicles with a steering box have two, plus the steering shaft has a slip joint. Some have rubber isolators. What could go wrong? ;)

I'm aware, but your post led me to believe that you are suggesting adding more possible failure points and higher manufacturing costs for no significant gain. If you witch hunt, you will find several witches.

If I remember correctly, the steering wheel on the Sierra I had was offset toward the middle of the truck, not toward the door like OP is reporting.

I never noticed it on the Tundra, but the offset in the Sierra annoyed me a bit.

Right. I did not mean that many are offset to the drivers side specifically, but many are offset from the seat.

That would have made more sense on a column shifter. I used to rest my pecker on it on hot days.

The offset bugs me too. At first I thought it was just me leaning to the center, but it's real.

It's really quite simple. It's configured for shorter people to grab so they can pull themselves up on the seat.

I notice this, and I actually really like it. I tend to keep my left hand on the wheel and my right hand on the shifter or free to adjust audio or AC controls. The steering wheel being offset to the left gives me more control with my left elbow staying planted on the door armrest.

our trucks' front driveshaft is located on the driver's side.

BMW is the worst offender on that on their smaller cars, sometimes I'm literately sitting tilted towards the center of the car cause the steering wheel is offset by good few inches.

Oem tonneau, side steps, spray in liner. Trd skidplate.

That was the first thing I noticed in my '18. Never noticed it in my '14 with bench seat

Great, now I'm never not going to be bothered by this. Never noticed it before...
