yeah, no doubt. Maybe a longer shackle that can swing back for storage with a rubber retention strap or something, but with a welded plate to limit forward travel of the shackle? That would give you the clearance to stay below bumper provided recovery vehicle isn't substantially higher than downed vehicle. Might need a heavier duty shackle if its longer though. Obviously spitballing here.

The solid, unmoving attachment point essentially needs to extend the frame forward and clear the bumper. Honestly the only way it can work with the deployable chin spoiler is to go through the front bumper. Toyota should have made tow pins like many Semi's use - there's a plastic cover that gets removed and a tow pin that gets put in and attaches to a frame point behind the bumper. That way you get your good airflow and you get your tow point - want to go offroad put the tow pin in prior to starting. Small inconvenience but effective from Toyota's POV.

I love how people are so crazy about tow hooks! I used my tow hooks on my Tacoma 1 time in 6 years…

No need to talk about them when we had them available and they were functional . Nobody was talking about turbo replacements when we were all driving the 5.7 either.

I was thinking the same things. however on my tacoma the tow hook had a similard designed and I used the multiple time and I never had issue. I know some say the spoiler will be problematic on the tundra but my tundra does not have the plastic spoiler.

I view tow hooks the way I view seatbelts. You'll probably never need them, but if/when you do, you really, REALLY need them.

EXACTLY! Same goes for pretty much all recovery gear. Tow hooks/recovery points are pretty fundamental to many recovery methods.

I also think the thought of not having them may make some think twice about what kind of ‘adventurous’ situation they willingly get themselves into.

…others it’s nice to know we do have them and not need it than the alternative.

For me it’s just one mishap going over one of these mountain passes in the winter that may call for a towhook situation.

Just minor stuff. For example, Undercover bed cover, Tufskinz custom door sill protectors, and TRD air filters.

I have them too. Peace of mind for $130 during Black Friday sale.

They are very beefy, at 5lbs each. They have good 12" of weld holding the hook to the body. You do have to remove two factory pieces that hold the sway bar in order to install these hooks, and I wish they made the hooks in the same way as the pieces you have to remove, so they would fit in the same little notch where the factory piece did. Instead, they fit over the notch and probably smush it when you torque them to 51 lb/ft.

Height wise, they are at the identical height to the 2018 TRD Sport. However, they are much further back than the 2018, so definitely exercise caution if you are going to use them. Using these does not automatically mean you'll rip off your front bumper, but you could cause damage. I am happy to have them, but I still think that Toyota screwed up by not offering the bumper hole like on many cars where you could at least screw in an eyelet tow hook.

Thanks for the write up on these. I think they could be a good last resort.

I’m leaning towards the CBI covert bumper myself. Watching a couple stalls and it makes wonder why Toyota didn’t include hooks behind covers — the bumper layout seems to lend itself to this and I wonder if an aftermarket solution that has a similar install to the CBI bumper comes out.

…because (it would now seem) that they wanted to get more into the aftermarket with their accessory partners which will allow you/those who really want it to have another ‘official option’ purchased at a marked up price
