I know there is a few of us on here who work in the industry. @Watt maker and @ColoradoTJ are ones I know for sure. Anyway just curious how many others there are. So lets post your job title and brief description of what you do I'll start.
I'm a control room operator for a large utility in Arizona. I operate simple cycle and combined cycle power generation units. I also used to be a Control operator for a coal plant with the same company.

In addition to your list, at least 3 I know of Brody. I just can’t remember their site names.

I'm an Operator. Work with two retrofitted coal to gas boilers, an 800mw heavy oil unit, a 2 on 1 combined cycle unit and a water treatment/ demineralization plant.

I found out last month I'm getting laid off. So I'm applying for Operator jobs in North Carolina and Wyoming. The company did provide me a groundman job on a line crew but it's a major demotion and comes with a nasty pay cut.

Sorry to hear that Daniel. I couldn’t remember your site name, but one of the operators I was thinking of.
Are you looking to stay on the east coast? Check out Panda Power. I know some people in PA that work for them and are totally satisfied.

Worth a shot, but haven’t heard of Panda having anything west of TX.

Is your power station being decommissioned?

I work at a 2x1 combined cycle as a lead control room operator.
We have two GE frame 7 gas turbines with an Alstom steam turbine. Plant net is rated at 480MW @ 80*F at this elevation.

With upgrading to auto tune and a partial Mark VIE upgrade, we can squeeze and additional 2-3MW out of each gas turbine. Emissions has been very good with the auto tune and has a good return on investment. Only downside is now having servo alarms non-stop due to the control system adjusting every 5 minutes and learning a new control system logic.

Hell, I’ll even toss in a Tundra power plant pic up in this thread.

    Boom

More or less, 2 units are being put into "cold reserve". In other words they'll never run again. They are 50's and 60's vintage. They are keeping our heavy oil unit and the combined cycle.

I’m a electrician at a combined 1800MW coal fired plant in Texas. Still fairly new, was commissioned in 2010, one Alstom unit and one B&W unit. One of if not the cleanest burning coal plant in the nation, I’ve been there since 8/12 and have enjoyed most of my time here.

We’re actually in our yearly outage at the moment, which happens to be a turbine outage. Here is a pic of one of our boiler feed pump turbines being replaced.

That's pretty slick. I didn't think they did steam driven feed pumps anymore. Everything's about that almighty heat rate nowadays. Our unit 4 has one. She's 1960s vintage.

We did the same with our older dirt burners as well. Sad times even after spending 200 million on scrubbing the units. What a waste.

Long story short, these 2 units were originally started being built in the late 70s but for whatever reason the company I work for decided to hold off and store them for 30yrs then finish building them. So these are an older design boiler that they attached baghouses and scrubberers to, upgraded the generator and took them from 750MW to 900MW. Bit of a Frankenstein.

One of the highest rated in the nation. Most guys are prior military and law enforcement. Very professional organization. Helps that we work directly for APS and aren’t contract. That’s when things usually go down hill because officers aren’t vested and aligned with the company. We are treated very well and perform well because of it

I do believe you're correct. These crayon eating, window licking retards wouldn’t be able to fight their way out of a wet paper sack.

No rounds are to be chambered while at work.

    Can’t fire until fired upon.

Most of us in the power plants are better armed and trained. Lol

 Can’t get into many details but it’s not like that at all at our plant, let’s just say we’re a lot more “proactive” and our state laws make it very easy for us to “take care of business” if needed. AZ has passed laws specifically granting nuclear security officers authority to use lethal force in protection of property, not just personal protection

Our guards are either gay, old, suffering from hot flashes, or about 300lbs... but they have 45acp glocks with rubber bullets lol

At least yours are armed.... Our "security" arrives at 6 and leaves at 3... No one else there overnight.

Our nuke stations are another story. Armed to the teeth and ready for anything.

I work for a very large utility in Ohio at a large coal fired plant still in service. Machinist here and working on my 39th year in same plant entire career. I mainly do vibration data collection and analysis currently. Been a good paying job all those years too. Unfortunately coal is dying out thanks to the previous POTUS. I will be fine because I have prepared for retirement and this happening. Sorry to see all of the younger folks suffer though. We have three older units retired. Three units still in service- one 840MW, and two identical 440MW units. All units have scrubbers attached. Our drawback these days is mercury in our coal supply. EPA regs are crippling our plant. The engineers are trying all sorts of hocus pocus fixes to try to capture more airborne mercury. Some work, most don't. But they try like hell to keep us going.

All the guards know we are better armed than they are. I have even “heard” 50% of our employees have trunk AR/AKs.

I’m pretty sure our guards, to draw their weapons, have to call and ask permission.

To be honest, we are not a threat. Cyber warfare, transmission lines and substations are bigger targets with little to no risk. I believe the commute back and fourth from home poses a greater threat to my safety due to all the road rage in CO.

Hopefully you guys can keep them going. We need coal, and I don’t have the time to devulge why, but once the coal has gone to 20% or less, watch out. NG prices are going to go skyrocketing to over 5.00 M/BTU. I have seen 8.00-14.00 per M/BTU and selling at cost over 200.00 MW/h. We see gas prices swing just a little and off comes a unit for cost savings (not practical to cycle coal). I’m on my 16th year and we have cycled our combustion turbines, between the two of them, ~2500 times.

The power industry is a great career choice with endless opportunities. You won’t have FU money, but you won’t want for much either if the person isn’t a financial retard. I personally enjoy only working 5 months out of the year, or 15 days a month/then minus 35 days vacation per year.

Here is a great article/map of where everyone’s power comes from.
