The system I take care of on the desert does this. It has gotten so bad on some of the electronic boxes that it has shorted out some of the equipment.

It's harmless and you don't need to do anything. If you really felt like it you could always paint it.

It’s slowly happened to many of my vehicles aluminum parts. I used to just clean it up best I could and spray it with some type of engine dressing.

Interested if anyone has some tips.

Corrosion is inevitable as aluminum ages in a humid environment. You could try a spray penetrating lubricant like PB Blaster or Kroil to seal it to some degree from humid air. Spray PBB on, wipe it around (toothbrush is a good idea) and mostly off, since any residue will attract dust like a dirt magnet. Periodically wash the engine to remove the gunk, and then repeat...how bad do you want the "new" look?

Edit: LPS3 may be a better product for this application than either PB Blaster or Kroil. It is specifically formulated as a corrosion preventative.

If you keep your truck outdoors it's probably due to condensation. If it stays wet for a long time time it will corrode.

from what i understand, the corrosion forms a light protective layer to stop further corrosion...i think i would leave it...

Exactly. If you park outdoors, dew forms on everything exposed to the air at the right temperature and humidity. In a garage, the ambient temp is higher, and it's not a problem.

True, but the problem is the oxidation of the aluminum is not uniform...it forms in distributed "freckles". It will begin to look a lot worse over time.

I moved to central Texas from El Paso, which is in the northern Chihuahuan desert. In a few years, the aluminum valve cover and intake on my 22RE 4Runner, which previously looked new, now looked like hell. I cleaned them up using Eagle One Etching Mag Wheel cleaner before I sold the truck. I believe that product has phosphoric acid which is an excellent aluminum cleaner, but I would keep it off all electrical, plastic, and rubber. It is suitable only for aluminum or alloy wheels that are not clear coated.

WD40 is not a water based formula. In fact, the WD in WD40 stands for "Water Displacement" since it helps to get RID of water.
