    Hi all,

I have been pricing the new 2022's. We will use it to tow a smaller Travel Trailer. All I can find about tow capacity is that the SR5, when "properly equipped" will have the maximum tow capacity of 9200 to 12000 lbs.

My question is does anyone know what options/equipment will determine if it will pull 12000? The engines are the same for all now. I don't see an option to change the gear ratio. Will it be the size of the bed?

    Thanks

size of bed impact overall weight, so yes. DC is lighter than crew so has more payload on similar equipped trucks. Then there are any options that add weight which make some trim levels weight more than others.

However, if you are pulling 12k trailer, that is probably better for HD truck , not half ton pickup loads. Tongue weight on a 12k lb would be at least 1200, on up to 1800 or more, if on the higher end that is really too much for a half ton truck unless you are alone and pulling the trailer w no other loads in the truck. An occasional heavy pull like that is no big deal but if you are traveling at highway speeds, with your family and gear, pulling that kind of trailer, half ton truck would not be the safe or practical bet.

To get max capacity you need the most basic truck. It'll be an SR, 2 wheel drive, and the smaller cab.

Checking Toyota.com (and from previous reports), the SR Model engine power/torque is derated and the towing capacity is 8,300lbs. The SR5 4x2 with DoubleCab and 6.5ft bed is 12,000lbs towing capacity. Other models go down from there as weight for options and cab increase. A more typical SR5 4x4 CrewMax with 5.5ft bed is ~11,200lbs.

Thanks, I haven't see any of the uploaded spec sheets yet. My trailer is just under 5K so I am sure the 1/2 ton will be fine. We currently pull it locally with my 2016 Tacoma that is a double cab, 6.5 bed. We wouldn't want to pull it across the US or up any mountains but it pulls great for our short 100 - 200 mile trips.

Keep in mind however, that 236 hp has to move a ton less.

So I am confused, you said you have a small light weight trailer but are asking about the max weight the truck can tow?
You will have no issues towing the 5K trailer period with any version of the truck at all.

So are you thinking of getting more trailer?

Yes, my Tacoma is on the edge now, probably over. It is only rated for 6400 lbs. We don't want to travel too far. Also, in the future we may want want to upgrade to a larger TT.

One thing also to remember is the SR has a lot more torque than the Tacoma and previous tundra at lower rpm’s. I have had 5 Tacoma’s and my new SR will be here in about 12 days.

    Kim,
As you have probably figured out, there’s 2 distinct issues at play; towing capacity and payload. Tundras can pull plenty but you will quickly reach the payload limit.

This exactly. It’s the main reason I went up to a 3/4 ton as the Tundra payload wouldn’t handle the hitch weight of my TT and it was a stretch on GCWR but payload was the limiting factor.
