    Hey everyone!
I want to put out there that I am in no urgent need of help and I'm just trying to plan my next rebuild project. I'm not super experienced in working on vehicles but I'm learning as I go. I appreciate any info as it comes in.

Truck info: 2006 Tundra Double Cab RWD 240,000 miles

I've been planning on rebuilding my brakes next since my drums are squeaking. They squeal when I'm breaking at low speeds on an incline, and they also squeak whenever I release the brake pedal. I also don't have a good service record on the truck and don't know when they were replaced.
Finally, my question. What the heck do I need to replace out of all of this? The truck has 240k miles and I live in a very mountainous area. I'm sorry if it's been asked before and i'm open to criticism, questions and help.

This may not be the answer you want to hear but it really depends on what you are willing to reuse. A complete rebuild kit comes with most everything that you will need…I’m pretty sure that the wheel cylinders are not included in the basic brake pad kit but can be purchased separately or you can purchase a rebuild kit for them also. It’s been awhile since I went thru mine, a couple of years now, but I went back with “new” on mine to include the “drums”. You can have the “drums” checked at most part stores for thickness, they could possibly be turned down and reused or may need replacing. Take pictures before you tear into it, it will help you with going back with everything. You can also put it on jack stands and remove both drums then work on one at time in order to use the other one as “reference”, this is what I done.

Hope that helps and I’m sure I left something out.

There’s always help here on the forum with folks that know a lot more than me.

Squeaking is not always indicative of need for replacement. I would suggest pulling a wheel (or two) for inspection before ordering parts. A build up of brake dust inside the drum and/or pad type can induce brake squeaking. They may just need cleaning and adjusting.

I appreciate the input. I want to reuse as much as I can without taking the risk of an older component breaking when i need it most

Heard. Thanks for the info. That might answer part of it. I'll check it when I get a chance to pull it apart.
My whole thing is that I might as well start replacing stuff while I have it apart because I've heard its a big pain

Inspect them first. I worked on a friend's tacoma that had the same symptoms. I was able to clean up the brake dust and use high temp brake grease on the contact points on the backer plate where the shoes make contact. Fixed the issue for her.

My screeching and others ended up being from the goddamn dust plate on the front brakes. It was super weird, only happened when the truck was cold. Was plain as day once I popped off the front wheels. I SWORE it was coming from the rear of the truck. But it was front passenger side. I posted pics on here somewhere.
