Ive always used regular non synthetic oil and am thinking of going with synthetic and perhaps a high mileage oil . Have 150,000 on truck , curious what you guys with 250,000 + miles are using , Thanks DArin

I have 270k and run whatever synthetic or semi-synthetic oil is on sale when I need a change. I did the Oreilly's brand last time and would not hesitate to do it again. I do 7-10k intervals which is about once a year for me.

Seth, do you use a high mileage synthetic or regular synthetic ? Have you always used synthetic ? I saw a thread on changing to synthetic and something about introducing it slowly, like first time do 60/40 split ( forget which was 60 and 40). Also saw something about synthetic being a bad choice for high mileage engines . All this seems a bit over thought to me but I think your way is working pretty well.

I think it was regular. I bought the truck with 250k on it, so I have no idea what was run before. Yeah I over thought oil to when I had some expensive stuff left over and was wondering if I could mix it with another brand without my truck blowing up as soon as I started it. It turns out you can!!!! After reading some articles I am a believer that oil is the same and I just run the same weight as I was before. Think of the millions of idiots out there who dont even know where the oil goes, let alone if they should run conventional, semi-syn, syn, hi mileage syn, purple oil, pink oil, etc... Somehow their cars keep going, kind of... I went synthetic so I wouldnt feel bad about stretching out my change intervals.

I think I read that article about syn being bad for high mileage vehicles, but wasnt it about it cleaning out years of buildup around seals that would then cause leaks? If thats the case then you are going to have other problems and these 4.7s arent known to be oil leakers anyway.

    Articles suggest:
    - that Synthetic could break up any sludge from conventionals and overload a filter. You could change your filter only 500 miles in on synthetic if concerned. You could also run something like Sea Foam in your engine prior to converting to help clean sludge.
    - that synthetic cleaning sludge could create oil leaks on old seals.

Change oil when needed. 60/40? just use a blend the 1st change, then try a full synthetic on the next, or just use blend again.

Mobil1, Catrol, Syntec full synthetic or blends or great.

I use full synthetic to reduce the changes, once yearly but only 3-4k miles at present. If it goes 14 months I don't lose sleep.

Quaker State 10W30 conventional in my 1997 T100 with the V6 engine since it was new. Get's better mileage now than it did when new. YES. It's not the Tundra. But, hey, it's close. I just passed 265,000 miles and it JUST KEEPS GOING.

Full syn on older engines will leak oil. Old gaskets/seals with tinier oil molecules and what not. Just run a conventional high mileage with an oversized filter and call it good. @Professional Hand Model just dealt with this.

    A good article.

    http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/122

My switch was from whatever service shop syn blend to Mobil1 Advance Extended Performance (flagship). That stuff penetrates through any weakness in your gaskets. It also is a great sludge cleanser. Some baked varnished areas on my fill neck can now be wiped clean with just a finger push after 6 months of time after the conversion.

I’ve since switched to Mobil1 ‘Regular’ Synthetic and my weeping has slowed. Next switch is to the ‘Syn High Mileage Formula’ to condition/swell the gaskets (if possible with 163k miles).

My engine purrs and no more heat ticks. Also did a lot of engine work like VC’s Gaskets, new Denso coils, PCV Valve/Grommet, Denso plugs, Toy YZZ3 (larger) oil filter...

Check out Project Farm on youtube. He's awesome. Dozens of well thought out experiments on engine oils. Amazon Basics oil is actually a good competitor to Mobil1.

Just put Valvoline 5w30 synthetic into recently acquired 125K 03 after driving a few K on (presumably) conventional that came in it...and I will say the difference in engine noise really surprised me. Immediately eliminated the consistent mild tap/tick sound that I assumed was due to decay in the forward exhaust lines. Feels smoother and little more solid, if that's possible / not placebo'd. Will watch for signs of leakage, but so far so good.

So I just have conventional in now, was thinking about doing the switch this weekend, should I do the mobile 1 high mileage synthetic or should I stick with conventional so I don’t leak?

    Your call bud.

If you do synthetic, the High Mileage Mobil1 sounds best. Stay away from the Extended Advanced as you’ll have oil creeping up to your antennae tip. The switch to Regular Synthetic has slowed the weeping.

My progression has been Extended to Regular Synthetic (current) to (next oil change) High Mileage Synthetic.

I used a blend for years (shop installed brand?) and going Extended full synthetic started a weep. Should have done High Mileage Synthetic. Mobil has a High Mileage Dino Oil.

On the bright side, my engine sludge is cleaned out. I swear that Extended stuff would crawl to the moon. Doesn’t even feel like oil.

Not exactly. I have not aggressively looked yet.
I can smell it so must be getting on the exhaust somehow plus the spots on the driveway. When it starts to pool on the driveway I may have to accelerate my investigation.

About a quart in 4000 miles.

I have 252k or so miles on mine and have run full synthetic 5w30 since I purchased the truck with 99k miles on it. Current flavor is Pennzoil Platinum. Zero oil leaks. Valve covers weeped for a while, I replaced them and keep them torqued to spec (they loosen periodically, aluminum heads). I would not hesitate to run synthetic in anything. I run it in all my vehicles. I even run synthetic gear oil in the diffs and transfer case.

Previously have been running Napa brand Synthetic (rebottled Valvoline) but this last oil change, I switched to Rotella 5W-30 synthetic gas truck. I have always been a big fan of Rotella in all my vehicles. I run it in my duramax and in both my motorcycles. I just changed it last week but it seems to be as good or better as anything else I have put in my FGT.

I buy almost the most fancy cute looking oil I can buy, so penzoil plat 5w30. I do not have the funds for amsoil or motul, which would be even more overkill lol. Of course paired with a 90915-yzzd3 filter. I really dont understand why people buy napa or house brand oil when all you have to do is spend 6-7 more dollars on a "higher quality " synthetic and higher piece of mind. On these vehicles you dont have to fix much, I like maybe "wasting" a few dollars on oil, I dont really care. But I also still live with my parents and dont pay Bills either so there's that also ;)

I might switch to motul or amsoil from penzoil plat. It gets -20 here in the winter and I think motul will have better cold start protection

That was very contradicting. “I buy fancy but not amsoil because that’s over kill”? :monocle:

Napa house brand is rebranded Valvoline. Source? I worked there for five years in my previous life.

I caught this on sale for $10.99/5QT
    https://rotella.shell.com/en_us/products/gas-truck-synthetic-engine-oil.html

It’s Dexos II rated for the old ladies car so I bought bought enough to do our next three oil changes.

Amsoil is far too expensive my point is. I have more piece of mind with oil that has better detergent packages that's just me though

I’ve run full synthetic ever since I got my tundra and she’s got 246k on it now with no oil leaks aside from when I spill trying to fill it up because I’m too lazy to find a funnel.

run what you have. It’s a Toyota.
