What kind of weight distribution hitch will attach to a tongue covered by a steel plate?

We have an old but still functional 1988 S&H steel stock/horse trailer (like the one pictured)that makes our recently purchased 2020 SR5 4X4 CrewMax sag pretty significantly. From all of my research, it sounds like a WDH is what is needed. The question I have is what kind of WDH will attach to a tongue covered by a steel plate? Is there such a thing or will I have to cut the plate to attach the hitch? Thanks!

I also have a2020 Tundra SR5 Crewmax. What I did for our travel trailer was add Firestone air bags. The WDH I use for our travel trailer. I definitely recommend the air bags.

You could also have the hardware from the WDH welded to your tongue frame but I think then if you sell the trailer your out those mounts for the rest of the hitch.

You can just notch the plate for the WDH. Done it a few times. The inside plate just needs to poke through the top. No big deal.

Thanks! I was thinking that I could just make an opening for the clamps. Any recommendations for a WDH? We used to have a 1988 F250 diesel that never sagged so this is new territory for us.

By the way, I retired in June and love it, too!

There are so many good ones. The two I have had are Fastway EZ and Equalizer brand LDH's.

I'll second this. I picked up a used Fastway E2 8,000# WDH used off Craigslist for $250. Instructions were available online and with some studying and a few tools installing and adjusting were very easy. These offer a simple but effective method of sway control and allow backing.

My Equalizer brand gave up the ghost after many years of abuse (I could have just replaced some parts) and gave it to a buddy that was going to rebuild it. So far, the Fastway has been a high quality LDH as well. Now I don't need one...probably should sell it.
