3rd Gen Tundra Gurus... anyone know what this is in the headliner just to the left of driver center? The factory mic I thought was in the console above the mirror (to the driver right).

    upload_2019-11-22_16-4-10.jpg
I have a 2019 SR DC, and am looking to upgrade my HU, I’ve read a lot about the factory microphone not working with aftermarket radios and I’m trying to plan my install accordingly but I have no clue what this is for?

    thanks for the help.

You will probably have to add an aftermarket mic to work correctly.

Are there two mics? This looks like a mic in the overhead Console

My '16 has the mic above the sunglasses holder, not sure what the other hole in the headliner is for.

More than likely you will have to use the mic provided with the radio you choose. Lots of places to put it, unless you want to try and solder wires from your factory mic to the new radio....

I wondered the same so I tested it a while back. My 2015 had the mic in the sunglasses holder. My 2019 has it in the headliner. I verified it by tapping on them while having a conversation with someone. They could only hear the tapping on the one on the headliner.
So my theory is, Toyota moved the mic to a better spot but didn't bother re-tooling the molds they make the sunglasses holder with.

Thanks! I was thinking that was the case, I’ll try your test and see if I can confirm but I think you’re right on.:monocle:

For anyone who cares, the louvered hole in the overhead console at least in my 2019 is for nothing...I took down the overhead console and its got a blank piece of foam in it. The factory OEM microphone is in the headliner shown in the first post.

Actually what started my questioning was I’m upgrading my head unit and wanted to conceal the new microphone - I took it down to try to see if I could put the new mic in that location. It’s easy to take down as it’s just held up by four screws.

so basically the one in the console is the bluetooth microphone for tundras 2014-2017 and i think the redesign for the 2018+ has the new mic location but they kept the same middle console part. good to know. thanks

Exactly my thought as well. Why they moved it I have no idea but they just didn’t want to change the part number of the overhead console.
