What is this behind the rear view mirror? is that the phone speaker, i want to know if it comes off. I am looking to stop a snapping noise coming from that area. I see a cable going in it and would not mind wrapping some noise rubber on it.

    Thank You,

It's the camera for the Toyota Safety Sense system. There is that one and then a sensor behind your logo on your grill.

Safety sense camera housing. Not sure if the slots are for ventilation or what. Maybe someone with online access to the FSM can see about removal if i had to guess just held on with clips of some type. A windshield shop would know for sure.

So i shouldn't mess with it. I thought it was for the dash cam they sell as an accessory.

No, the camera up there and the radar in your grill work together to identify objects in front of your vehicle.

They allow your adaptive cruise and pre-collision systems to work.

You can reposition the radar apparently, as folks have done to use different grills, but the camera I wouldn’t mess with.

The camera if moved must be re-calibrated. I would make the dealer fix the noise.

I wouldn’t be surprised that along with ventilation for the camera there is a microphone. These vehicles uses multiple microphones to do beam forming and backrgound noise filtering using DSP algorithms. So I wouldn’t cover it up in case it messes with your BT Hands Free calling and the other person might have a hard time hearing you.

I take it to the dealer to have Oil Change and check noise and he tells me tech could not hear anything??? I tell him i have had other people sit in the passenger seat and tell me there is a snapping noise when driving. The only time it does not make a noise is when over a smooth stretch of highway, otherwise its always making the noise. I think i have to phone Toyota office for a second time. They told me they entrust the dealerships to handle all repairs...really?
