What is this notch/bump/ridge on the side mirrors?

Seems oddly placed to just be a design element but it doesn’t look like something functional.

Vortex fin is maybe what it's actually called? They are on the tail lights also and on the Tacoma's (3rd Gen)

 

Mike the tundra engineer explains it when talking about the new Gen 3 Tundra in one of the videos, it’s for better aero/handling characteristics.

 

help reduce wind noise, which is pretty bad in a tundra

 

The new gen has several of them strategically placed overall several parts of the body. If they are vortex generators they are used to manage separation flow with the goal of reducing turbulence.

 

there is a neat story about the inventor...he had an LS400 way back when. they were known for the wind noise by the rear view mirror.

he came up with the design....sold it to Toyota. the rest is history.

 

To quell wind noise.
