Love this! but is there a way to mount it lower so it would fit under a hard cover?

    Lots.
I researched quite a while before purchasing it and checked out a friends Crossbin 8 to inspect the build quality, etc. I wanted some sort of secure removable storage that would allow me to keep an upgraded jack, towing strap, tool and first aid kits, and when necessary "lengthier enhanced personal protection equipment" in the bed. Since I camp and kayak frequently it was important to me that it be easily removable and not permanently attached to allow for more storage options.

I decided to go with the 13 since it has quite a bit more room for storage, and I'm tall enough to access the bottom of the tray reaching over the sidewall of the bed even with the lifted truck. My friend went with the 8 because he is shorter and felt he couldn't easily reach things at the bottom of the 13. It is utilitarian looking but well built, and lightweight since constructed from sheet aluminum. It fits inside of the the bed rails snugly but allows for positioning fore and aft when necessary. There is still some space available underneath the bottom of the tray and the bed of the truck. The cut out sections of the tray allow the locking rods to pass through and preclude it from moving very far when subjected to harsh trails. The instructions state that if you intend to use over very rough terrain you can secure the tray to the bed rail with a couple of sheet metal screws to stop all movement if necessary, I won't be doing that for sure.

Time will tell but I think it will work perfectly for me. They are pricey, like all Diamondback products, but hopefully the "buy once, cry once" adage will prevail. The only thing I would probably do differently would have been to order it at the same time as the HD cover to save the shipping cost and wait time of ordering it separately.

Definitely not a bad idea, but we wanted to jump in to clarify for anyone who may have the same concerns.

For anyone else looking to do that, we can confirm that by using the existing tie-down points on each of the corners your DECKED system should never rattle or bounce around.

Let us know if you have any questions.

A few updates over the last few weeks. Installed a Retrax Pro tonneau cover and today I put on a Yakima Over Haul rack. I had ordered a BKC T122 tandem kayak in blue camo about a month ago, waiting for it to arrive in a few more weeks.

The mount goes only on the rail or tow hitch. U can leave it unmounted and in the bed then just snap it in when ready to use I suppose?

Great setup, but consider to move your rear rack back on the bed so the tower sits over the oval stake pocket cover knock out on you bed rail cap when in use. That area has the most strength / structural stability in your bed and is designed to carry an overhead load.

BTW, I have the same, & love it aside from the initial cost.

Ordered the metal oil filter cover on Amazon and received a message asking for my VIN. Sent it to them and they said the plastic and metal aren't interchangeable. Just to make sure, no one has had any issues switching to the metal one, correct?

No issues, the part # i used on my 19 is 15620-31060. Pretty sure it fits your 17 as well, just make sure to swap out the inner metal tube when you do the swap.

"Finished" lift, installed Boss shackles @1.5" and Fox 2.0 shocks to match 2.5 Fox coils w SPC UCAs. Very easy install EXCEPT for the removal of stock leaf bushings.

Tip: Go to Napa and borrow their ball joint press tool. When almost pressed out, squeeze said metal bushing sleeve with said tool from the other side, should come out fairly easy.
