What did I do to my rear hatch latch?

All the trim push pins on the rear license plate surround piece on my ’07 Sequoia were broken or missing. It rattled and was driving me crazy. I wedged a piece of foam between it and the door, but wanted to fix it right. I removed the license plate, took off the interior trim on the hatch door, removed the access panels, and removed the nuts necessary to pull the surround out far enough to put in some new push pins. I didn’t disconnect the cable to the latch lever, or the connector for the license plate lights. I didn’t need to move the surround very far to get the new pins in. I put everything back together and now, the door won’t unlatch.

The latch lever is the metal version. It seems to have resistance.

It had to be something I did, since it was working fine beforehand.

    What should I look for?

    Thanks,
