So I’m just wrapping up my Wilco Swing Out Tire Mount project and have a quick question for guys who weld. So I reamed out the holes in my mounting plate and sunk a few wheel studs to right up to the knurling. I’d like to either tack, or spot weld (don’t know the correct term) the studs to this mounting plate to make certain they stay secure when I torque down a few lock lugs. Question is, do I need to wire wheel the paint off the plate adjacent to the head of the stud where the guy would place the weld? I want it to be as quick for the guy as possible. Wish I knew how to weld! Thanks guys.

The cleaner the surfaces to be welded, the better.

If you remove any paint or rust from 1/2" around the weld area, you should be good to go.

The cleaner the surface the better the weld will hold. You won't want paint in the way if possible

They also make weld through primer if there will be time in between the cleaning and the welding to prevent corrosion.

Yeah, take the paint off where you want it welded. Paint over it afterwards.

Figured as much. Thanks gents. Would I be asking the guy to spot weld, or tack weld it? Prefer to not appear completely clueless.

Its kind of six or half a dozen, I'd know what you meant either way. Technically though, tack weld is what you want. Spot welding is a specialized process used on very thin materials.

Met the welder today. Did they job for nothing and didn’t want to take any cash as we are both members in our local gun club and we shoot the same matches. Small world. Threw him a 20.00 just for his trouble. Project moving along, I just need to mount a remote rear back up camera.
