I have a 2010 4x4 Toyota Tundra 5.7L that is driven daily about 10 miles on rough unmaintained desert dirt road hauling water and feed to livestock. This truck already has some gremlins, a few that several mechanics cannot find but tonight was a first.

I went to put fuel in it because it was sitting just under 1/4 tank. After fueling up the engine tried turning over but it sounded like it wasn't getting fuel. I got out and listened to the fuel pump and it was running. I tried again while pumping the gas pedal but nothing. The third time around the starter decided to stay engaged so I turned off the ignition which obviously turned off the starter.

I got mad, put the truck in neutral and attempted to push it away from the pump. After a few minutes of going maybe an inch I decided to try to crank it again. I didn't put it in park, I just turned the key over and it cranked right up.

I have been at work for almost 2 hours and have cranked it about 6 different times now and I cannot get it to recreate the issue. Any ideas what it could be? If it is something that doesn't require major removal I can handle that.

Side note truck has a rough idle that several mechanics have not been able to diagnose. It takes forever for it to shift from 2nd to 3rd. Sparks plugs were done in January in the hopes that it would fix the rough idle but it did not. Air filter and oil was changed in February. I will admit that I was ticked off tonight and I may have driven it pretty dam hard all the way to work so maybe that fixed it's little red wagon? I just don't need it to do this when I am out on the dirt roads because even emergency services cannot find where my property is so I highly doubt a wrecker can even find it much less get out there.

New issues arose and now I think it may be the air injection system. 4LO is blinking, traction control off light is on and the check engine light is on. Would an air injection issue cause what I had last night and if so how hard is it to replace that pump on a 5.7? I don't have access to a code reader although I'm going to try and I really don't feel this truck is safe enough to drive it 30 miles into town to get it read by AutoZone.

I've seen purge valves go bad on Gm vehicles that cause hard starting after fueling up. Wait until you have to get gas again and see if it does it then. It might lead you in the right direction. Or in some direction anyway.

1st How old is your gas, this may cause an idle issue having water or other contaminant in there, I use to fuel on base right before I went out to town and my truck would stall out by the end of the road leaving the base. The only difference was the fuel I got, after a few times I stopped getting gas on base. 2nd Your NSS Neutral Safety Switch may be going, next time it fails to start, try dropping it into Neutral and retrying to turn it on, if it turns on in Neutral than you can sort of narrow it down there. 3rd It sounds like your starter is dying. You mentioned that your starter got stuck cranking, maybe replacing it is something to consider last.
Referencing your blinking lights if it's the SAIP it will drop you into limp mode to protect the engine and you will need a mid-grade OBD2 reader, which will get you ABS codes, and maybe transmission codes. Basic ones may not be enough to extract some of these codes. An ABS C code will get these same lights blinking too. I get the C1201 code every now and then and get the same Christmas tree.
